Intentionally Installing and testing anti-virus programs ??

Are there any sites or programs that allow you to actively test the effectiveness of an antivirus program in real time.

For example; download a "real" virus, malware, or batch of infections and then bombard a PC or virtual machine to test the effectiveness of the software. That way, the best settings, programs, and solutions can be established in a test environment.

With such a program; id be able to download and package all the most destructive viruses, malware, and rootkits in an executable or archive and save it for testing use. Would work wonders for finding the best protection.

Free porn sites, Free mp3 sites, piratebay other torrent sites are your only test ground. I have one computer in my store isolated on its own networked that i let people come in and wreck with infections to teach them about how to not do it. And I jsut test diff software's in my spare time on it. Have had the best results with malwarebytes Kaspersky combo.

So the best way would be to download them myself and run them on a real PC or virtual machine?

You can do it on a real over it virtual... But I prefer a real machine only because some malware could have problems attaching itself properly ie. Virtual hardware drivers.

Agreed real, IT's not hard find an old mobo put enough ram for windows to boot and any old hard drive would do and walla you have a **** machine to torture.

Yeah im currently working on a nice collection as we speak. Have windows 7 in a virtual machine and im just downloading and installing porn downloaders, cracks keygens, warez, etc etc. I guess im going to have to do it the long way

Agreed... I guess I missed the OPs original reason... to test AV software. Doing this is only really good for learning how to remove malware and not so much for testing A/V products themselves.

It's not just free time, either.... Like I mentioned in another thread a while ago, any antivirus worth anything is going to be able to detect and remove most of what you find to download...because it'd be in their definitions.

Throwing a few randomly downloaded sample viruses at a machine is worthless in testing any antivirus effectiveness.
