I was wondering if anybody has recently signed up with onforce, they are now asking for more personal information, like social security number. Any input on this matter would be appreciated.

Tahst becasue you are hired as a independent technician thru onforce. Any website/group who hires you out requires it, thats the law.

I think they tell you all that as you sign up, its for your tax forms and waht not. why worry when you will have what you need taken care of.

Tried it briefly and it seemed like a war for the cheapest tech, like $65 to drive an hour an repair a non booting OS. lol Maybe others have had more luck with them but to us it seemed like a waste of time.

No, that's all it is.

I remember seeing one have it's price raised from $60 to $75. Either way, it was for at least 2 hours of work.

The sad and stupidest thing is that I am willing to bet that 99% of the jobs are from those "nationwide on-site computer repair" sites that charge $100/hr.

I have done quite a few onforce jobs and I can say for the most part the jobs are going to take longer, be terrible and horribly run. The last one I did.. the building was not even completely built yet and the staff didn't know who i was. Also the pre configured router was not configured. etc. etc. etc.

They offered a flat fee and refused to up the price despite having taken much longer due to their own stupidity.

That being said. If you have nothing to do that day.. and you don't have to drive to far.. you might as well do them and be inspired of why you want to work for yourself. Also the texts are a good laugh sometimes. $25 for a server install 400 kms away!

Nothing sad about a company making money. What's sad is the number of techs willing to take those jobs for next to nothing, thus devaluing themselves and every other tech.

You can search through the posts I've made by looking in my user profile and see a long drawn out post or two I made about working for some of these national warranty companies. The works is always 5x harder than they tell you, it will take 3x longer and they will pay you 1/4 what you would have normally charged.....then you have to wait for a check.

Oh and I agree about the service calls they offer you and they say, "The call is just down the road from you in XXXX." Um...that town is 2.5 hours from here!! Oh well in that case we could probably see about getting you an extra $30 for travel time. WHAT?!lol:eek:

I've asked most of them to take my name off their list and not to call or email me anymore but they still do sometimes. I just ignore them now but the calls aren't as frequent after I started quoting them the price that it would take for me to take the work order. I think the last one, they wanted me to drive 1 hour and do a job that I knew would take 1.5-2 hours and they wanted to pay me $65. I told them I'd THINK about doing it for $325 and the girl on the phone started studdering.lol

I have have repeatedly found that people in the other 49 just don't get how big TX. They don't realize that El Paso is closer to LA than to Dallas. When I drive from Austin to Vegas, half the trip is just getting out of Texas.

I used to work for a company that was headquarted in Michigan. We'd get scheduled for jobs in Midland. Because they'd look at a map of Texas and use their Michigan scale and think Austin is relatively close to Midland. It just isn't.

I would imagine you'd run into a lot of situations like this from this type of operation. You're not close, but you're the closest they have so they try to stick you with the job.

Ha!! I totally agree. I had that exact conversation with one of those reps. trying to get me to take a job that was nearly 3 hours a way. She said "Well it looks like you are located in a great area...right in between Dallas and Houston, lots of business opportunities." I told her, "Ma'am, Dallas is 3.5 hours away and Houston is 2.5 hours away and the Louisiana border is less than 30 minutes away. So the way I see it, I'm not close to anything."lol She just couldn't get over the fact I was so far from Houston and Dallas.

I know exactly what you are talking about concerning that El Paso drive. I had a buddy in the Marines stationed in San Diego. When he was transferred to Japan I flew out to San Diego to meet him and help him pack all his stuff and drive back here to East Tx. We went through California, all the way across Arizona and New Mexico and spend the night in El Paso. I looked at the map and realized we weren't even half way home yet! Texas is a HUGE state.

No kidding. Now imagine it's not a little state like Texas (268,600 sq mi) but a real land mass like Ontario (415,600) or Quebec (595,300)! :D

600 miles (Austin-Vegas) wouldn't even get me out of the province if I headed for Manitoba; Winnipeg's about 2000km (1200 mi) away.

I'll bet OnForce wouldn't cover that mileage!

A real land mass like Alaska has 663,268 square miles. :P

It sucks cause you have to fly to remote places for tech support and the internet is all over satellite links.

600 miles?? Dang! Even the Canadians can't scale their maps. Try 1300.

And you get 1200 miles of Canadian scenic splendor. I get 200 miles of wildflowers followed by 1100 miles of sand.

It also sucks because everyone thinks you get rich off the annual oil check but never take into account the fact that a McDonald's Happy Meal costs you $12.
