Mac Mail can receive but not sent, if there's mail in the Outbox after a reboot it's then sent, all settings look to be correct
I called ISP thought maybe they had changed something they were no help it works in WebMail.
It's a pop account I was going to delete the account and set up again I was 99.9% sure I would not lose anything but did not want to do it until I check
I was going to get them into Thunderbird but they have a mass of subfolders in Mail.

I get this error message when it restarts I Googled the error could be Malware, Will run Malwarebytes when I go back

DO NOT DELETE THE POP ACCOUNT. Apple Mail will eat your files when you do. It's not like Outlook or other programs where the data file hangs around when you delete the account settings. Got burned by this once.

I'd try setting up the email account on a separate clean Mac and see how it behaves. Getting mail to send from stand-alone email applications gets tougher every year it seems.

Thanks for the POP info being a Mac I had that feeling.
I am sure it would work on another Mac but I have to get it to work on this, everything is OK on the other end, it just stopped working
I was thinking about creating a new Imap Account if it will let me with the same email, probably not.

You’re making a lot of assumptions there. Chances are you’re right, but if you’re not you’ll be wasting a lot of energy and possible data loss when it wouldn’t have mattered.

If you don’t have access to another clean Mac then set up a separate user account on that one and try setting up the email there.

I guess there are many ways of fixing this like creating a new user and importing everything from TM.
if it was Windows it would be easy to repair Outlook, or create a new profile.
Nobody has chimed in to help as it's not an easy solution.

I'm one of those who'll try to always create a backup of any database type app prior to doing any work, doesn't matter what the customer claims. Of which email is one. How big is the email store? Did you flash PRAM and reset SMC? Did you start up in safe mode, holding down the shift key when starting up a machine thats been off for at least a minute, launching and testing mail? How about Onyx, which will re-index. How big is the store? If it's really large, as in manny gb's, it might be permanently corrupted.

Beyond that I'd be really surprised if that ISP provider doesn't have IMAP. I never take what their tech support says at the absolute truth. I'll just create a new profile, setup the email but instead of pop.<insert email server name> I'll use imap.<insert email server name>. You'd be surprised how often that works.

Sorry, Timeshifter I appreciate your input and you saved my life I might have deleted the account and lost 10 years of emails its a massive database probably the cause of the problem

ISP does have Imap

When you say create a new profile, you mean add another account don't think Mail has profiles like Outlook might let me add with same email

Will try your suggestions Mark then its TB emails import easilly

Separate user account on the Mac. To my knowledge Mac Mail doesn't have profiles like Outlook. (Although, you could get them Outlook for the Mac which does support profiles, but probably not a good fit as they're running High Sierra which is out of support and probably won't take a current version of Outlook for Mac).

If this is a business, I would quote them minimum, backup of entire system, then upgrading to a supported OS that allows greater options. Then also quote for Office Install with Outlook. They are asking for trouble if this is a business and they are relying on an email app that could crash and burn at any time with really no backup options per say. With outlook you can at least set up rules to create a local PST that archives everything, as e-mails can be super important, so having them both locally as a file that can be backed up and on the ISP server is a good plan. You will also have an easier time supporting Outlook as it won't crash and burn as easy as Apple Mail will.

If you're still having issues with this...
Find any large/extra large emails in the inbox/sent. Delete.
Disable any AV during testing
Add IMAP to the same profile/test and if it works, you can copy folders up to the IMAP usually, then get them off POP
Or you can move them to a new server, add that account to the profile and copy/move folders. This is a great upsell for 365.

Thanks, everybody for the help

I ran Malwarebytes it found a virus wish I had taken note it needed to reboot to cleanse it so it was not good. also, pop up error on startup disappeared when I clicked send I could hear the swoosh
Should have done that on the first visit I don't do many macs.
My first go to on a PC has always been Malwarebytes.

I was in a coffee shop today everyone had a 13 MBP , not a spare table they looked like they were settled in for the day my sympathy for the owner.
