Got an
iMac "Core i7" 3.4 27-Inch (Mid-2011)

The hard drive has failed on it, Pulled the drive and was able to get the data off using Mac Drive 10
Mac Drive confirmed the drive as bad. Installed a new western digital black 1tb. Booted the IMAC into the internet Recovery, Takes hours and just fails. Did a bit of research looks like this IMAC unless the firmware is upgraded it will not do the internet recovery. I been trying to find a legit download of mountain lion to get it going, and create a usb disk but nothing seems to work. I am using TRANSMAC to create a usb drive. I don't have a spare Apple system just laying around. (although i probably should)

The guy was running el captian on it. I even tried to create a USB drive using an EL Captian dmg i had downloaded.

any help is appreciated.

How did you tried to create the usb? use this: Install Disk Creator, you'll need another mac runing any version of mac os.

Did you use Disk Utility to first partition/erase the drive, reboot and then try to run Internet recovery? And are you doing Internet recovery over copper or wifi. Wifi has a lot of problems. I only do it over copper.

ideally, you should have used an SSD and install 10.13, then it would be a good system with some time left in it before it is outdated

Those 2011's are great machines. According to Apple the max ram is 16gb but you can usually double that so it would be 32gb. Got a couple I'm upgrading for a customer. Came with 4gb so I'm tossing in another 8gb, more than enough for their needs. And, of course, replacing the spindle with an SSD.
