I spent 9 years and 9 months working in the IT department of a local business with locations in multiple cities and states. I left that job on July 1st 2016 for a variety of reasons but I needed to get out of the place and happy I did.
I of course didn't just up and quit one day with out a new job lined up or anything but it was a great turn of events and shift in my life that I needed. I went with no breaks and began working my new job the very next working day, had weekend and a holiday, so was great to not have that gap in steady income.
I thankfully had 3 weeks additional pay in my prior jobs final paycheck to hold me over until my first paycheck from the new job. The new job is not IT but in local government and I work in tax collection. I do have IT related responsibilities but my day to day is not filled with IT task.
I work primarily to provide suggestions and solutions for the office IT needs and as the liaison between this office and the IT department. I have been enjoying this job and the lower stress levels I have had as there is not the constant demands from multiple people and departments I had in IT.
I still do IT work on my own nights and weekends for some additional income but this is light duty primarily home users and some home or small offices. I just wanted to share this story of my escape from being an overworked IT drone and the humor I see in it of leaving just before 10 years at the job and making such a drastic change in career.
I plan to continue doing IT at various levels and hope to have more time to get certification to aid in my personal side work as well provide options down the road if I want to shift back into IT for my primary job.
