Hello Everybody. My name is Jose and I could use your help. Tomorrow I am going for a job interview at a IT support company. From what I know they are looking for part time IT consultants to help with there clients.

I'm thinking of redoing my resume to reflect more of IT consulting then just the the of compaines i have worked for.

Now like most people my resume just has that jobs i worked for in the past and what my responsibility was. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions that might help me out.

Thank you ..

Generally your resume should reflect what you can do rather than what you have done. You want to list your KSAOs (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics), education, work history, and references. That's pretty much it. Keep it simple, don't overindulge on details.

Here is a link to the US federal archives to explain KSAOs in more detail.

Ok here is what I have. Now its not finished yet at all but its something. My problem is that this resume is getting to be very long and im trying to cut this down. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

You really should add any education you've received. For instance if they are looking for a associates/bachelors and they don't see that on your resume its going to go right past the screeners and into the trash. If you don't have any formal education but did some trade school or even just a HS diploma, you want to make a category for that. Where you put it depends on the style of resume you have going. From the looks of what you have so far it looks like you are going towards a professional resume rather than chronological.

The KSAOs probably need some revision. Your work history only needs to go back about 5 years, but for this particular resume I'd take it back 10 years. Make sure you reference company names and contacts if possible. It's all a bit long...I'd try to shorten it up a bit.

For your KSAOs, try wording things like this:

Knowledge of [insert things that you understand like networking, specific OSs, specific hardware and software]
Skilled in [insert skillsets like troubleshooting, networking, repair, customer service]
Ability to [insert actions that you can perform, like multi-task, work under pressure, meet stringent deadlines]

etc...

You don't necessarily need to list all the hardware and software you're familiar with. Just generalize and highlight some popular ones.

No problem at all! I always had a really hard time writing resumes. The college courses helped me understand them a lot more. Unfortunately I can only give you the theoretical stuff, because I've never had to actually put them to use. I was at the same company doing the same job for nearly my entire working career.

First of all i want to thank you guys for your input. Your ideas and suggestions where taken and put into my resume. I spent hours on it and the end result was a resume that was 1.5 pages long. Many of you said to keep it down to one page but right now being just about 1.5 pages is better then what i had before. You guys are the best.

And yes i got the job.
