I massaged an lcd panel to remove 3" vertical streaks!

Hi all,

I had (and maybe still have) a laptop whose lcd panel that had one of the typical vertical multicolored streaks running down the screen. In this case, the streak was about 3" wide and ran down the right side of the screen.

I researched on the internet and found out that in some cases you can remove the streak by putting pressure on the panel, so i gave it a try. I slightly twisting the panel back and forth for about 15 to 30 seconds - nothing happened. Then I massaged the top part of the panel where the circuit board is by putting pressure on it across its length back and forth for about 15 to 30 seconds - nothing happened.

I was about to give up when i decided to try massaging the top part of the panel and circuit board again when all of a sudden the 3" streak just disappeared - Success!

I have tried to get the 3" streak to come back several times but so far it has not come back.

While i would not consider it fixed as I would replace the panel before reselling it or considering the laptop repaired for a customer, I will keep the laptop and see if the panel fails again. This reminds me of my time at MSU as MIS director for a research group. At times when a system would fail, I would lay my hands on the circuit boards and the system would reboot and work - i think I'm blessed ;).

In any case, i hope this works for some of you techs.

Your comments are welcome.

Massaging LCD panels has worked for me in the past...more-so with stuck pixels...can't remember if I ever tried it with a "streak".

Instead of "massage"...so as to avoid some whacky comments by Berties ( :D ) I'll rephrase that to me something more along the lines of scrape down hard with a fingernail or something like that.

Yea... maybe "massage" was a bit much, but it is - 2013!

Actually i think that, since there are 6 sections on the circuit board, the last section (the section that contained the streaks) may have had a soldered connect that separated or possibly a dust or particle that created a short. The solder gap may have been closed or the particle may have been dislodged - who knows, all i know is that i've tried to get it to fail multiple times and it's still working.

It's a new year and I'm off to a great start!

Where the heck is Bertie (Rob) anyway? Hope all is ok with him.

Will you do my back, neck and arms next?

Lol. :D

I wouldn't tell my GF I was 'massaging' an LCD. Could result in a loss of sandwich and other privileges.

Totally kidding, being facetious, etc. Carry on. :p
