I gave it a serious shot.

So I've been running Windows 8 for about a month now.

As soon as it was released I got it for the upgrade price of $15 or something like that.

Upon install I wasn't sure what to expect I hadn't got a chance to test Win 8 at all yet.

First impressions: Windows 8 is garbage.

Install went smooth.
Boots up faster.
Then I was lost.

I tinkered my way around for a bit ... figured out how to find stuff, create shortcuts etc. Switched from Chrome to IE to be able to fully test Win8.

Midway impressions: Windows 8 is garbage ... why make things harder/more complicated to find.

I installed classic shell to get my F***ing start button back, and to skip metro.
Reinstalled Chrome.
I am left with what is essentially Windows 7 that boots up faster.

I have setup 3 new computers for customers since Win 8 started coming on new computers. Every single customer is like WTF is this how do I use this? I install classic shell and they're like ok I get it now.

I was waiting to see what the Win 8 Tablets could do, now all I want is a Win 7 Laptop.

Final impressions: Win 8 is garbage

WTF Happened since Win 7 and now? I feel like they hired a hipster to re-arrange the whole OS to be hip and cool but the guy smoked too much weed in the creation process. These new ideas they came up with were PURE bs.

I feel like I could reinstall 7 and lose NOTHING.

Also metro not talking to the classic windows OS ... Who in gods name idea was that?

And things like pictures defaulting to metro instead of windows picture and fax viewer? WHAT IN GODS NAME?

Agreed.

When I installed the previews of Windows 8 I had the exact same point of view, I felt completely numb, lost and frustrated with this .... creation. It didn't take me very long to revert back to Windows 7 in blind panic when some of my key apps stopped working.

When it officially released I dipped back in and haven't got out. Giving it a couple of weeks after install and I was able to do things much more efficiently, get around the OS a lot more quickly. Search Charm is genius, rather than trudge through the desktop interface for a particular setting I can now search for it, that in itself won me over.

I for one am pleased to see the end of the start menu, it was clumsy and archaic and doesn't come close to the efficiency and speed of metro by any stretch.

Metro is obviously further enhanced with a touchscreen and when doing serious work I find two screens a must, that way when metro does decide to take over you can keep it to one screen and still refer to say a PDF when writing an email.

Having said that there are a lot of niggly issues which I'm sure will be worked out in time but because of that it ultimately has the sense of feeling like an interim release, almost, dare I say, a little like Vista. Not that Windows 8 is on the same level of awfulness, just needs a little something else to bring it up to par with expectations.

I have to use Windows 8 at my desk at work now to manage Server 2012 because RSAT for 2012 doesn't exist for Windows 7. Yeah, Microsoft has screwed me over again...

Windows 8 might look different but there only options helpful for users familiar with old OS.

1) Click the default icon "Desktop" and you will see the old desktop without the start menu
2) Move the mouse to the upper right corner and you will get four options. One of the 4 option is setting.

That's pretty much it.

You can also chose to add one of the ready made icon called "File" This will bring up Windows Explorer. Windows file folders is almost the same. You have the user folders, Program files and Windows.

I remember once I smoked some crazy good stuff. I invented the refrigerator. I was so deflated when a friend told me it already existed. I had plans drawn up and everything.

..and I'm getting ready to give it a go on a nice little 4GB Dell Optiplex 755. We'll see what happens...

I'm wondering how many people who don't have TOUCH SCREEN monitors are going to scream WTF 'cause the computer don't work right. I see that as a possible issue.

I tried Win8 back when it was in BETA (or should I say in early development release to the public). I didn't like it then either.

BTW - These forums are a great place to get really good information. I wish to thank all of you who post info about products that make our lives easier. ;)

Cooool man, really cooool. :)

Nice to see win 8 getting a frosty reception. Win 8 is snow joke.

I've worked on a few win 8 machines. I'm still incapable to booting into safe mode. :(. :(. :(

If you are trying the Shift - F8 key method, that won't work if Windows can boot. You get into Safe Mode through msconfig and reboot.

If windows won't boot, then the Shift-F8 will work.

Still don't know what happens if windows boots but the malware locks things up.

Altrenda
Big wet sloppy virtual kiss :) !!

If I've read that right, that key combination will only activate if the machine has recognised a failure to boot.

That's why I couldn't do it. :)

Sorry about the stubble ...... And the open sores ...... And the asphyxiating bad breath ..... And other odours.

Yes that's what I have learned.

Thanks for the virtual, if not virtuous, kiss. With your...conditions, you are similar to most of my dates before I got married.

So what's the best file to rename/delete or whatever via CMD prompt to make Windows 8 decide it needs to offer the safe mode option?

I am by no means an expert, but I have been following the problems TN members are having and trying to find solutions to learn for myself. I find WIn 8 to be different, but no real challenge.

When you use it on a touch screen laptop, you understand what MS had in mind.

Been saying this for months now. People are just now starting to see I was right. What a piece of garbage.
