HTML and PHP page endings

I currently use Wordpress for my website. My permalinks are set to be post names. I have been seeing multiple websites that use Wordpress and joomla to run their site. I was wondering what the reasoning was for having those endings I.e. .html or .php. Is there something I'm missing? Does it have to do with speed or seo?

I would appreciate it if someone were to fill me in on this concept.

Thanks,
Tyler

Removing the extension is called pretty url's, mainly its just to be more aesthetically pleasing for any customer going to the site. Personally i think its better to remove the extension as clients dont then have to remember what technology you built the site in. They can just go to about rather than remembering about.php.

There are also some apparent seo advantages ie if it contains any of your sites keywords.

Per my SEO plug-in, it dramatically can increase your page rank (I am not sure what they mean by dramatic) by adding key words into important pages or posts. I usually adjust my permalink to reflect keywords (IE page name Laptops - change to portland-laptops)

Sorry guys I meant to say they are set to PAGE NAMES not post names. So that's good because like you guys I am taking advantage of the keywords.

Thanks for your advice I just was curious.
