I have an Hp Pavilion notebook we had to change the mb in and we need to do a tattoo on it so the restore feature works. We do not have access to hp or there info. Can anyone provide me with the tattoo and the instructions to do it?

Thanks in advance if possible!!!

You can't Tattoo a notebook, you need the feature byte and bid to apply the tattoo and it is nowhere on the laptop and HP wont give that info out.

For a laptop the restore should work without the Tattoo. Write back if it doesn't work.

Not only that, distributing that software is prohibited. If you don't have access, you have to work around it.

It's a tool that HP provides for authorized repair centers. In the agreement to sign up to have access to their program, tools and software, you agree that you won't distribute it. At one point, they had you agree to terms to download it each time.

I guess thats good on my end I never signed something like that. I do a lot of sub contracting work for warranty companies and that's how i acquired it. I have signed statements not releasing company specific info, but nothing about a tool that every tech needs if they replace HP motherboards.

I feel pretty stupid. What in the world is a tattoo for a computer?

It's a marker in the firmware/BIOS of a motherboard that identifies the make & model of a branded PC so the recovery disc and mfg driver installers can work.

To add it also holds the windows serial key. If you install an hp motherboard that is not already tattooed, and did not need to recover it, it will eventually become non genuine.

Are you doing a system recovery using the recovery partition and then get a "configuration error ... code purple" error? if so, there's a way around it; check out my post from last year: http://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19459

I know this is an old thread but anybody know if it's possible to replace the mobo in an HP win7 desktop with a non HP mobo?

Here's the situation... customer has 2 identical HP desktops purchased in the last year. He wants to install a dedicated gpu and when I look inside there are
no I mean 0 expansion slots. Fullsize desktops not any slimline or mini style.

He's already bought 2 pci express vid cards and wants to swap out motherboards
to make the whole deal work.

I'm thinking I can just do a universal restore onto the new motherboard?

You could do this bit you'd have to reinstall and activate Windows 7 using an OEM disk and the COA on the case (recovery partition won't work). However, activating the OS this way does circumvent Microsoft licensing terms. Although Microsoft does allow activation of an OS when replacing a motherboard with a non-identical one, there is a stipulation in there agreement that says it can only be done if there are no identical parts available.
