HP Laptop System Board Queston

So, I was contacted over the weekend to do a service for work market. a local client needs a system board replaced and memory installed. (this I have no issues with.) but the client wants to tattoo the new system board with the old serial number.( here is where i have the issue. ) #1. I have never erased a serial number and replaced it with a old one. #2 Is it legit to do so.

I assume that the clients wants it done so he can keep his laptop under warranty, but if that is the case wouldn't HP just update the warranty with the new board?

If it's been opened, it's not under warranty. If he wants it under warranty, he needs to send it into HP to do warranty work.

... it's strongly likely to be in the legal black area, and it's definitely in the moral grey at the very least. I'd say no.

Sounds like a normal warranty call. You have to run the tattoo utility to update the DMI information or the computer won't boot. Unless you know the tattoo procedure and have phone support for any issues I would pass.

I just confirmed with the client, it is an off lease laptop form his work, and he wants to replace the board with one from his old personal laptop. ( strange I will admit, and pass on the job.) It has nothing to do with a warranty.

He is trying to change the mother board of company computer?

I wouldn't touch it.

There is no logical reason to do so.

Is he trying to get a better system for himself, by taking the board from the company machine??

Doesn't make any sense, especially with the high labour costs which are involved in such a job.
