Hi All

I hope you can help with a laptop I have in for repair, as I can't seem to diagnose the problem.

It is a HP Pavilion with XP Home on, 512Mb, AMD Athlon64 & 150Gb HDD.

The problem is that it will suddenly just turn itself off whilst running Windows. I have checked for over-heating CPU, RAM faults, HDD errors but everything checks out fine. All vents are free from dust and power supply is constant, although the battery is shot. The fault occurs with or without the battery.

I have run a Linux Live CD and that seemed to be stable. Is it XP causing the problem? I have never come across this problem before, and any help or guidance offered will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Pete

HP has identified a hardware issue with certain HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario V3000/V6000 series notebook PCs, and has also released a new BIOS for these notebook PCs, version F.39 for dv2000/V3000, and version F.3D for dv6000/dv9000/V6000.

NOTE: If you are a customer in Canada with an HP Notebook model DV2412CA or DV2404CA, do not update the notebook to BIOS version F.39.

If you own an HP Pavilion dv2000, HP Pavilion dv6000, HP Pavilion dv9000 or Compaq Presario V3000, Compaq Presario V6000 series computer, are experiencing no symptoms on your computer, and would like to obtain more information about updating your system to the new BIOS release, please go to the "Update the BIOS to the latest version" section on this page. If you are experiencing one or more symptoms listed below, and your computer meets the product criteria listed below, contact HP to determine whether you are eligible for a free repair.

NOTE: This service enhancement program is available in North America for 24 months after the start of your original standard limited warranty for issues listed below; otherwise your current standard limited warranty applies. Customers who already have a 24 month or longer warranty period will be covered under their existing standard HP Limited Warranty.

Not sure about the UK.

Have you checked your event log? It has invaluable information that most people seem to overlook. How does the computer run in safe mode? Make sure that "Automatic restart on system failure" is unchecked; or else diagnosing could take some time.

I had a problem like this once. Didn't realise what the problem was for ages, computer keeped on shutting down on me, specially when I was ripping a DVD. I always thought it was the application, and tried several others to the same avail. Then a mate told me to install SpeedFan and keep an eye on my system. I was noticing that my computer was overheating quite a bit, and my PC was shutting down just before 70 degrees celcius which is way to hot in my opinion. I just set the fans thresholds differently in the BIOS and it worked better. Made better use of my 5 fans lol. Works perfect now, haven't had a heating problem in ages; just got a sound problem now lol.

5 Fans and ripping causes it to overheat? I really hope your transcoding at the same time otherwise you need to take that to a professional! ;)

On the same note use cpu burnin to do a quick test, it will crank out the heat nice and fast.

Well obviously not all of them were working when it was overheating lol till i played with the fan threshold settings in the BIOS menu.

Speaking of BIOS's, anyone know a good site for BIOS's? Some are quite hard to find...

I recently had the same problem with a HP dv1000. After researching it for an hour it looks like there was an engineering problem with the laptop that put to much stress on the motherboard. This would cause it to break some of the soldier joints. I ended just taking out the good parts and selling them on ebay.

If you thought it was an engineering problem, wouldn't it be best to contact the company and let them know, or search on the website to see if there is a product recall on it? I know a couple months ago Sony recalled all there new models which had the chance to catch on fire, like a lady up north in New Zealand set her kitchen alight; was all over the News, was hilarious to watch.

Unfortunately, no one @ that time was recording the News on there HTPC to upload to YouTube.

Hp likely won't repair it since it is long out of warranty. The board is bad. HP would replace the board for a fee. We replace that board for usually around 249.95 total or less. Prices change daily.
