HP Compaq DC7800 CPU & PS Fan Full Speed after sleep

Hello techs,

I am having issue with HP Compaq DC7800 where the computer goes into sleep mode and then when trying to wake using mouse or keyboard, cpu & power supply fans go to full speed. This only occurs after 2 hours of sleep mode. I duplicated issue once on customers PC. I researched and disabled some power settings on BIOS. Left it idle overnight and no issue. I thought maybe that BIOS setting was somehow interfering with windows settings and that was a fix. To test this, I reverted the BIOS settings to the way they were and I have left computer idle over 2 hours several times without issues today. I am not sure if the problem somehow got solved now or should I expect the customer to come back a week later saying that issue is still not fixed. Any ideas?

How long do the fans stay in full speed? The reason I ask is because I have/had comps with this very thing but the fans run at full tilt for only a few seconds to a minute then go back to "normal."
Adjusting the power settings via BIOS or Windows can alter the behaviour as you state.

Edit: You could try something like "SpeedFan" or similar to control the fans.

Barcelona, thanks for your reply. Apparantly changing the power settings in the BIOS fixed the problem. No more fan issues.

Well, the fan issue remains. Client has come back to report issue still persists. I am stumped and not sure what else it could be. I am tempted to just buy a mainboard from ebay for 20.00 and see if all along the mainboard was the issue. Thoughts are welcome.

What happens when you stress test the machine.
Are the temps ok?
Maybe something is "pounding" the systems when it resumes?
I would rule out heat issues 1st.
What processes (excessive) are running when it happens?
How long do they keep running?

Thanks for your suggestions. What is the best way to do stress test and check temperatures? I did research on my own and noticed this particular model is known for this issue. In some cases, it was related to motherboard sensors on the board. Hope that's not the case, but it could be. But I definitely want to rule everything else out.

Use Prime95 for stressing plus Speedfan for temps. This will just confirm if the machine overheats when running at 100%.

Performing a stress test is simple:
http://www.mersenne.org/download/

  1. Download the software and unzip the files to your desired location.
  2. Run the Prime95 executable and select "Just Stress Testing" when asked.
  3. The default options are sufficient to do a well balanced stress test on the system.

Thanks for the info. I am waiting on client to get back with me.

Just to clarify, the computer successfully wakes up and is fully functioning its just that the fans keep running at 100%?
