Hi, I have a regular customer I service remotely, well this time I'm stumped, infected and she has internet access, however I cannot connect because all the file associations are screwed. I emailed her xp_exe_fix.reg and xp_fileassoc.bat, had her try to import, no go. I tried safe mode and got her to run task manager then type in regedit to import the file, no go. I thought of calling her back and have her run chkdsk, ideas?

How about creating a drop box account. Put the file association fixes in there, and see if your client can run the fixes from there.

Either that or the chkdsk / sfc scannow.

How would the dropbox be different than selecting "run" on the attachment or running from the desktop? I will try chkdsk when I call her back, but I have my doubts there. My plan is to connect to another pc they have and burn a live cd from it then have her pop it in the problem one, run it and connect me that way, lots of hoops though. thanks for your input.

Sorry.. Blonde moment. You will have to forgive me, ive been on the go since 5am.

Does your client have the 'nouse' to remove the drive from the machine, and slave it to another, so you could remote in, and check everything?

May be easier than burning a live cd etc.

No I couldn't ask her to try, I can hear little kids around her...

Quite welcome. I set it up for remote fixes -- where I can get a connection going but am still otherwise blocked. I haven't set one up to download and merge the default .reg entry but I a) haven't needed it yet and b) would want to find one on a trustworthy source so that I could share it like this one.

In this case, I didn't code it. Why reinvent the wheel when someone else had already written that one as a .com? All I did was make an end-user-friendly link to it.

I see, well you are still responsible for pointing me in the right direction! thanks to you both!
