I know, Shocker that I am in this forum lol...

Just curious...not looking for help, in fact I'm not doing them ever at CTG. I had a meeting with a guy yesterday that wanted me to pitch Sonic's to my clients. $1500 for everything. I thought that was high, but what do I know.

So I was just curious and thought I would ask the pros here.

It depends on the model, what subscriptions, etc..

The issue I have with sonicwalls is the fact they have low UTM throughput, for example I have a client that has a 50Mpbs fios connection, has 3 desktops a tz105 would be enough for them but to get the throughput of the fios line we have to go with a tz215. for this reason we have really been pushing cyberoam, great units with great throughput.

As has been said, it depends on the hardware features and security needed, but you could blow through $1500 quick. Just as an example, a modest TZ 205 wireless w/ some gateway antivirus and content filtering for 2-3 years would run you somewhere around $1000. Figure in some time for installation/configuration and you're there. And if you have clients that need higher throughput, more WAN failover features, etc, etc, the price can go up significantly.

It varies greatly...as they mentioned above. There are MANY different models of Sonicwalls, as well as what options have been selected, number of users, etc.

Next.....there is the yearly support/subscription renewal fees...

And next...is your time/support...who will be supporting this, and what are your support avenues....straight from a rather useless reseller/wholesaler? In which case you're stuck dealing with Sonicwall support directly...which is quite painful! Or through a "Gold Partner"...which is a high volume reseller and generally someone you'd have a good relationship with as a buyer and you'll get good support through them directly.

*Hardware on them is very good...excellent. Once setup/configured..pretty much set them and forget them.
*The web interface on them is a little different...if you're just used to Linksys and DLink routers you'll be like a deer caught in headlights the first time you drill around the web admin looking to do some port forwarding.
*The UTM features aren't that great.
*Can bundle with Kaspersky for enforced AV...that is one good feature. McCrapee is the other bundled AV option...useless
*The yearly support renewals drive long term TCO up.
*Good wireless units with the WifiSec security

That price...1500 bucks...not necessarily high for installing/configuring a business grade firewall. Can certainly be much higher! But..without knowing the model, and options..and size/complexity of network it's being installed on...hard to answer. Kinda like our discussion about servers...there's really no flat price...it really depends on many options.

This guy a competitor or vendor? If he offers any of the same services you do or want to, you can't let him be at the edge of your clients network...

What size company is this for? It seems quite high unless it is for maybe a 25+ user company.

I have been a Sonicwall Partner for over 15 years but recently just dumped them because of them being acquired by Dell.

Turns out he was a snake. He contacted me to help with our outsourcing needs and he was ok until the end of the meeting, when all he did was pitch the firwall stuff. I told him I'm not into it, nor will my clients.

Then he hard pitched the next day and it all ended uncomfortably with him saying "now doesn't seem to be a good time to talk" and me saying, "Yea, now is a good time to talk and we're probably not going to be able to get you jobs"

Dolt! I told him twice. I'm not a freaking pushover. Anyway, I don't know jack about the firewalls and was curious.

Thanks everyone!
