How did you come up with your business name?

Hi all,

I have been doing a lot of research on small businesses and the computer repair industry. I have a pretty solid business plan and assets to start out, but the most trouble I'm having is deciding on my business name. I was just wondering how some of you folks came up with your name. I noticed a lot of companies are called "_____ Computer Services", "PC Repair of ______", etc... I want something less generic but simple enough for a potential customer to know what I do from the business name.

Is having your service in the name actually that important?? Anybody have a unique name that doesn't include "computer repair", "pc doctor"? Do you have any trouble with people that don't know what you do? I would assume you could have a tag line on your business card and website that would explain that you're selling computer repair.

I don't think branding is so important to someone like me. I know this business is not going to become a nationwide service. So maybe a simple name would be more beneficial?

I guess long post short, what was your philosophy with naming your business? Did you have any problems? Would you do something different if you could?

Thank you in advance for your time.
Nick

My philosophy was to come up with a name I could tolerate and a domain name was available for. We do more (and want to do more) than simple repair (we also do volume licensing, consulting, etc etc), so another goal was to allow the name to not serve as a barrier to what people envision us as providing.

Names I seriously considered:

Runlevel 5 Technologies (domain / spoken to written issues i.e. "five vs 5")
Runtime Technology Solutions (domain)
SMART Computer Systems (trademark concerns)

Eventually, I settled on NetSplit Technologies.

It seems I have a thing for names that IT people understand... and yet are still acceptable to the general public.

Mine I just wanted a name that people remembered and was short as well. Everyone comments on it positively along with my vehicle. I'm not sure I did right seo wise but because the similarity of The Hobbit it sticks in their minds. :D

The name of my Co. is Complete PC Recovery. I feel the "recovery" part of it could eventually limit me in the minds of potential customers but right now "recovery" oriented services are all that I offer. I will change the name down the road if I feel it is best. Right now I think the name of my company gets my message across just fine. Good luck.

Are there any advertising/SEO downfalls to not having your service in the company name?

It means you'll just have to do a better job of choosing great keywords for your website and other advertising content. A page title/company name is not all a search engine/potential client reads.

And similarly, for your website page titles, you're more than welcome to do something like "[Company Name] - [location] Computer Repair".

Take again my company name... If people shorten it and just search "netsplit", they'll get nothing but results for the IRC network. From an SEO standpoint, it may mean that my choice of name was crap. But, I don't want to be known as simply netsplit, so I'm okay with that.

- "How a Company Name Chose Me" -
I took a set of scrabble tiles and put them in a pouch,
Then sat down and contemplated, while sitting on the couch.
I took the bag of tiles and shook them vigorously, until the bag of tiles was scrambled quite thoroughly.
Closed my eyes and said a prayer, launched the tiles high, into the air; the pieces landed everywhere.
But to my shock, what did I see, a company name appeared! Mysteriously!

It said, "Nerdy Geek Computer Doctors on Site with a Squad of Medics" or NGCDSSM abbreviated. (Great for SEO)

I had a few rules when looking at branding:

1. Nothing with geeks, nerds, medics, doctors, etc
2. No numbers (is that a 3 or a three?)
3. No acronyms, abbreviations, etc (TPG Computers) because spelling out letters over the phone that all sound the same makes you want to pull your hair out

From there we spent two months spitballing names. Crossed off the ones we didn't like, eliminated the ones we liked but were taken. Ended up purchasing a brand.

Trixit

People ask me "What's a Trixit?" I say "What's a Twitter?"

People ask me "What do you do?" I say "I fix computers." In all fairness, people will still ask you that question if your company name is ABC Technology. They might not ask you that question if your company name is ABC Computer Repair, but I didn't want to go with something that was THAT specific.

We help reduce these types of situations by having our tag line in the logo as well as having an IT themed logo.

I too wanted to stay away from geek, nerds etc.. no offense to those of you who use it in your names, but I felt it was already over used. Like geek squad, geeks on call, geek house calls, the same with nerds and the like. Anyhow I don't quite recall how we settled on Boston Professional Computer Services but we did. I still get people who come in and even after they see a few disassebled laptops on the back counter still ask if we fix laptops.. or do we remove virus' etc. Others just drop it on the counter and say how long to do X, Y or Z. I think if you got computers in your name it certainly gives the public a basic 'idea'. I couldn't really say SEO wise we don't do that much nor does the net gather us much business.. word of mouth and physical signs seem to bring in the most business.

I started out with Pritech (My first and last initial i stood for information and I shortened technology to tech) as a dba, but everyone pronounced it as Pre-Tech instead of Pry-Tech. I decided to modify my previous logo to include Primary Technology Solutions in hopes that people would pronounce it the way I wanted them to. When I incorporated I decided to use Primary Technology Solutions. I kept Pritech for a few months and decided it wasn't worth keeping (do a google search and you will see why).

I wanted it to be original. I had tossed and turned between all these ideas. Then remember the "Nerd Herd" from that one show on TV. I then randomly got "house" and NerdHouse was born. I then realized wow, it's kind of cool, reminds me of Tony Hawk's company, Birdhouse.

Im terrible at design and thinking up names. So, I told my wife to think up some names. I told her I need 3 possibilites. My wife has quite the imagination! So the next day she had 3 but one really stuckout to me.

Renue Computers - Because we re-new your computers!

Now I have to figure out the graphics. Im terrible at that also but going to give it a try.

So, Perhaps get some family input and see what happens.

Good luck,
:)

This is pretty much how I feel too. Could you elaborate on the purchasing of a brand? As in someone created it and you purchased the name and logo?

A website like http://www.brandings.com/ would be the place to go. I originally went there to get some ideas based on what they had offered, but ended up making a purchase.

I received all rights to the name, matching domain, and a sample logo (that we scrapped and my designer came up with something better). They use GoDaddy for their domains as do I so the whole process was wrapped up in a day.

Cavehill Computer Services - as i am based in the North of the city of Belfast, 95% of my customers come from around the Cavehill area in Belfast. Cavehill is the name of a local mountain and district in North Belfast.

I matched the domain availability with possible names which greatly limits your choices. I wanted computer repair in the name some way. I didn't want to long of name for signage purposes. So I ended up with Computer Fix-It.

Yes I think the name should say something about you and how you are different from your competitors.

My son's name is Affordable Computers. Simple, implies value, implies repairs or all things computers.

Its not a bad idea to put your location such as Wichita Computer Repair.

What a great concept, I went to their clearance sale and they really suck, not even worth the $199 they were asking. I hope they do better with their premium clients.

Since they give you the logo, brand and domain they over use incorrect spellings, incomplete words and word pairs that do not really make sense.

If you have the money of Mcdonalds you can tell the world you make hamburgers but since we don't have those funds we should tell people who and what we are in the name-IMO.
