How business?(November-Current)

However I have been averaging 3-4 a week, mainly Malware removal and fixing errors.

That's pretty solid for doing it on the side. I had 3 drop-offs total the first two weeks of November

Luckily things picked up a little at the end and I ended the month with 18 invoices.

Yes it's been pretty good. I was really supprised as thought I wouldn't get any business until after Christmas. I really don't want to be doing much more or I won't have any time to relax..lol

Oh no!!! We want your comfort zone broken!!! LOL...:)

I have not been able to get into my zone this morning. Business is going great and I'm glad it's doing the same for everyone else!!!

I am going to work my butt of until a few days before christmas and then try to go into some kind of "lockdown" until New Years. I really hate working that holiday week and will try to avoid any complex work. Problem is that with a store front you can't just push customers back out the door when they walk in.

:p

Check this out. Right after I made that post a guy walks in with a big 17" Acer laptop. Power on and it just keeps booting over and over. This one looks like another Nvidia heat victim, but I gotta test it later tonight.

Busy, busy, busy...... :)

At least it's still booting. Usually when I get one with the Nvidia heat issue it's to late.

That's great man! I am the same way. I almost called a tech in to help me. Your right, you can't just push customers out the store when they come in. I hope you get so busy, that you gain a grey hair in your beard as I recently did...LOL! Nah, am I getting old though?:(

I'ts really terrific things are picking up again. Late last year and most of the spring and summer it looked kinda scary. I sometimes went a couple days without any decent work, but now 2-3 machines a day and most are $100 profit each or higher. I just wish so many HP and DELL machines weren't DOA and needed new motherboards. Most of the time customers wont do a mobo replacement if its going to be $300 or so.

I just cannibalized a dead Gateway MX6959 for chassis parts for a guy who dropped his MX6439 and broke off the hinge mounts and did alot of cosmetic damage as well as a DC jack. The internal frame and base are identical and the power button bezel is too, so I fixed his DC jack on his mobo and put the parts from the other machine in his machine and didnt charge him too much. This way I can do something useful with the dead stuff laying around here and make more money.

I have not been doing much lately ( I only do part time anyway). but since joining here I have picked up a little interest again. (lucky for me) I have had 3 jobs this week and two more booked in for Saturday. All been drop off's so been able to work them together. Thankfully they just been clean up's so other than the time not very hard, Saturday might be a little different dead laptop and a boot up problem, (customer just said I just got that black screen when its booting up) oh what joy. and another whilst i was writing this computer keeps running filechck when turned on.

Steady as usual. A couple new CCTV projects coming up, a few projects to wrap up and a huge one we have been steadily working on for a few months now. Service calls are coming in as usual too.

Ive been tossing around the idea of doing preventative maintenance contracts(pcs/cameras). Things have just been so busy though i havent really had time to really think too much about it.

I figure for every old customer we have that calls us for a service call that is a nice potential preventative maintenance contract which could equal some nice steady income. Since it seems customers are way too good at breaking things.

It's pretty crazy, the last dozen or more machines I have gotten have been laptops. I know laptops have to be selling more than desktops but I wonder what the ratio is.

I know the a Manager at a local best buy and at their store it was about a 60 to 40 split with the edge going to laptops

Interesting. I honestly thought it would be more of a 70/30 split between the two.

In all honesty I thought it was more 80/20 by now. Who (besides people who use computer for professional use, or gaming) still buys desktops anymore? Why on earth would someone want a "huge" tower in their home looking all ugly when you can have a cool looking laptop that's portable...

People often will buy towers for their teenage children as they are on the brink of responsibility. Their not as comfortable giving them a laptop so they'll purchase desktops for starters. At least that's what I've noticed.

I feel the way you do though.

Not too good. I'm a student once again and it's a must to turn off any mobile phones during lectures so I'm missing the few calls I've been having before I've actually re-started school. We've signed that if they discover our mobile phones are switched on they have the right to take it (inc. the SIM card) for the whole year!! And I'm not risking this, it will end up worse. Most of the phone calls show 'Whitheld' and there's nothing I can do to phone back.

Do deal with this I'm asking my clients to send me a message and I'll phone them back. But those people who never used my services before don't know this, so most probably they end up phoning someone else.

So yes, I'm in DS atm :( Whatever happens, I know what doing business is like now, and will use my experience for other adventures in the future. I'm trying to find a part time job, which will solve most of the problems, but the unemployment is sky high. Fuel price is increasing almost every two weeks, water and electricity bill are expected to increase by more than 20% in January. Can't do miracles as a student.

Just for your information I've started a Diploma in IT. For the Brits it's the BTEC one. I'm from Malta though. It's so easy, I've ended up teaching a student of a higher level than me and even one of the lecturers as regards to hertz! and other binary! stuff!! Hopefully this will lead me a to a degree in IT, some 4 years from now.

Hey DanF,

Do you not have a family with a landline or mobile who could take messages for you? You could set your mobile to divert the call to that number when it is not reachable.

TLE

Shocked even on a rainy and really cold day people are picking up several and around 6 or so drop-offs as well, staying steady which is nice, overloaded actually but that's a good thing really.

Tweak- what I'd like to know is what are you doing. In a previous post you mentioned something about $2,000+ in credit card orders a day (let alone cash and check orders), and now you're saying a 6 or so drop-off rate is "steady" which translates as "good enough"...care to throw us a bone or two :D
