Thought some of you might find this useful...

Last night I was up until 2 in the morning trying to get IE working on a laptop I HAD to return this morning. Anyway, I had cleaned a LOT of viruses and spyware off the computer and disabled the usual start up items. Pretty normal stuff until I could NOT get IE 7 working again. I tried re-registering it, I tried dial-a-fix, I tried winsockfix, I tried scf /scannow, I tried resetting through the option menu...nothing. A copy of firefox portable would work fine, but MBAM wouldn't update. Then I noticed that in the IE option menu where you reset it, the dialog box said that it did not reset internet connection settings. Something told me to check this. When I did, I noticed that there was a proxy server setup. Now, I knew this client probably doesn't even know what a proxy is, and the server was almost a random name. So, I deleted it. I don't remember the server name, it was 2 in the morn. Anyway, I cleared it out and Viola! it worked!

Just thought I would put this out there in case anyone came across the same thing.

There are a number of variations of that MySpace/Facebook virus that install tinyproxy in Program Files and create an internet proxy. You may have had one of those on this machine.

I always use the IE7 reset option after cleaning up virus infected PCs. Same goes for any problems with IE7 itself.
