I understand the concept, but I haven't see the PIO mode default happen on a SATA controller to SATA device.

I think I have one of these in a recording, I am not 100% sure. I will check when I get home and I am fairly certain that the sata device was under Primary IDE channel in device manager. If I find it ill post pictures.
