Held up at crcdisk.sys

A couple of things you could try:

Run Memtest on the ram just to be sure(using another spare compatible computer)

How long did you allow the computer to sit when it loads on Safe Mode and displays the crc file as loading? try letting it sit for about an hour, take a break and get something to eat.

read this link here sounds like the same thing you are going through:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/mic...6-safe-mode-not-working-hangs-crcdsk-sys.html

Hope this helps.

The computer dosn't hang, it goes in a loop (as in restarts after hanging at crcdisk.sys for about 20 seconds). Not sure if I worded that before in my original post.

I'll run the memtest on all the sticks of RAM just for fun.

Just finished 3 dskchks, 1 with the /f switch and the other 2 with /r. Didn't show anything out of the ordinary, and didn't help the problem.

I find that sometimes Windows will boot to normal mode straight after check disk, even though it won't attain safemode.

Failing this could you read the files on the drive, whilst it was docked?

I ask because the next thing I would look at would be to take the registry back a week or three, either manually or by System Restore from the Vista DVD.

I tried booting to normal first, then it went straight to the loop. After that I tried safemode and it locked up at crcdisk.sys and then restarted.

I can read the files on the drive when its docked. Im wondering if I should just back everything up and attempt a fresh install. What do you think?

This thread is getting so long I had to go back to find out what the original information was.

Since you took the battery out have you reset all the relevant parameters in BIOS? Date, time, etc etc?

I would not normally resort to nuke and pave without discussion with the client, but it may be the quickest and cheapest option.

Have you got the drivers for this machine you will need immediately after a reinstall?

Haha, I know. I think we have a chance to break the record!

No I didn't change the BIOs parameters. I'll give that a try.

The client is a personal friend (THANKFULLY), and its one of those 'do whatever it takes'. I'm not charging at all for this job. I do have all the drivers, and the Vista install makes everything pretty painless I find. I'm not keen on nuking it first yet. That will be my last resort.

Well a simple reformat fixed the problem. I'm guessing that somehow some file got corrupted. I would have loved to figure out what exactly happened though. Thanks for all you help.
