saw this for the second (maybe third) time today..

the first time was a few months ago

just randomly, out of the blue, you'll hear an advertisement of some kind

and this happens when no browsers are open - !!

often its difficult to hear because you're not expecting it - and/or the speakers aren't turned up

long story short - for the benefit of anybody else coming behind (and yes, i did a quick search on this forum for "ads" "commercials" "advertisements" hoping it would turn up something on this virus but it didn't)

anyway..

i ran combofix (heard the commercials after running this) - then TDSSkiller (found a rootkit - cleared it - never heard anything after that) - followed up w/ MBAM

*seems* to be clear

to note, i also was experiencing browser redirection before i ran TDSSkiller, but not after - browsing was also very sluggish

seems to me TDSSkiller was key to this operation

has anybody else come across this? and dealt with it successfully?

anyone know what could be causing this? i ask because in doing research on this, someone mentioned the HP support/assistance app was being hacked

and yes, this is an HP desktop

So, assuming that there are no viruses or any other malicious software running in the background, have you checked the speakers? I have a set of cheap speakers here that randomly picks up on signals from radio station. I have seen this with Guitar amplifiers as well.

I have run across this a few times and everytime it was a virus/spyware. I find that TDSSKiller didnt always find it. Try HitManPro. That program was the only one that could find this little bugger.
