Has Anyone Experienced Corruption?

There is a LOT you can do, but it may cost your more than you will loose by not having the sign in the first place. You DO need a lawfirm to represent you.

1. If you plan to post a sign, read your HOA completely.
2. Take pictures of ALL your neighbors's sings and any threats you got.
3. Write a leter (paper trail) to the zone/codes-enforcement jerk INFORMING him of your competition (Plausible Deniability goes out the Window)

4. Draft up a Cause of Action and file suit in a Court of Common Pleas alleging violations of Equal Protections AND Freedom of Speech.

Sit back and smile. They can A) pay your a ton of money or B) settle with you by 1) letting you compete or 2) stopping your competition.

Thank you!

This is a competitor who was putting the signs up, and then the government guy is another competitor.

They weren't my signs, but it just made me angry that there's corruption going on. It's my first taste of governmental corruption: I was never naive about it before, but it's still a shock seeing it first hand.

Another take on this:

If you feel the advertising is really causing you that much grief then go to the newspaper. You can do this one of two ways:

If you want to take a swing at these scum bags then send a letter to the editor explaining what is going on. Then follow up with that by placing an "advertisement insert" in the newspaper for a little while. At least around here, it's not that expensive at all to put an insert in.

Or just go the route of putting the insert in the paper, advertise at other local businesses, advertise through word of mouth, make sure your website is in order, maintain a blog, advertise in craigslist, and beyond all make your customers want to choose you over your competition. Put it in their hands.

We had something similar in our smaller city but with the sandwich boards on the sidewalks as our bylaw said only events could be put up. I was not even warned and they took my sandwich board that I used to help people find me until my signage was put up. They wanted $75 to get the sign back which is not right and we should have gotten a warning.

So one day I saw a sign that they seemed to always overlook because of their good friendship and accidentally ran it over ;) because it was in the middle of the road in the yellow area. They fined me for public destruction of property but I dealt with that very quickly as the sign should not have been there in the first place, if I cant have my sign on the sidewalk them why can they have theirs in the middle of the road.

I dont think I will ever deal with the City but that is ok because they would only be a waste of time getting me to quote something and then going elsewhere to get it.

I wanted others opinion on whether it's a common thing or not. Seeing from the response a lot of folks are interested in it. So I don't know why you're telling me not to post it.

Did I post it in the wrong category? Does the forum have strict rules about off topic posts?

I'm new here so I don't know whether I should have posted it or not for sure. It seems pretty laid back here so I didn't see any problem with posting it. I just wanted others opinion.

I wasn't jumping on you man, I'm not that kind of guy.
That one sentence out of context sure does look that way though, and for that I'll apologize.

I was merely stating that if this is something you wish to actually peruse, contact an attorney BEFORE this thread takes off. Because anything you say here (as well as comments we make) can be used not-so-in-your-favor.

Call his office and report the signs. See what he says and if they'll be removed at all. If they remain or you're given a BS reason, go to the council meeting with pictures and complain about the unsightly things. If he's allowing them to stay because of made-up ABC reason, put others up following those same guidelines. If yours are removed, march back to the council meeting and suggest that certain businesses/people are receiving special treatment. I'd call him out on it, even if it means no one gets to have them up.

The council meetings around here are hilarious. Before the last election, the council members were constantly fighting and getting arrested in city hall. Those meetings were better than TV.
