Hard drive low on space (make room and space decreases again)

I really don't think there is a fix for this but... Win xp drive says low disk space.. I went in and cleaned up about a gig worth of file space, let it sit and voila low disk space again. I went back in removed 1.6 gb of files, let it sit and once again low disk space..0kb... I have a feeling the drive is failing and reporting or mis -reporting space available. Oh of course I ran temp file cleaners.

This is just kind of an FYI as I really dont think there is a fix except replace the pc with a win 7 machine.

How much space is actually left on the drive? Did you try slaving the drive to another machine to double check available space? The swap file could be using a lot of the free 1GB of space if there are a lot of page outs.

Pretty basic stuff here...Otherwise provide more details.

I had something similar, caused by Norton Online Backup IIRC, saving the c: drive user data to the c: drive. Don't know who set it up, but it gobbled almost every byte available on the drive. Have you run WizTree or similar to see what's taking all the space?

I manually set the swap file to 50 mb, and 100mb's. File space is 0kb on drive down from 1.61 gb 20 mins' ago.

Slaving it show 1.5 mbs free so that is about right..

Just like Larry, I had a guy just a week ago who had managed to set up Windows Backup to his own PC by UNC.

Cleaning generically is useless if you don't actually look at what locations are taking up the space.

When I used wiztree on slaved drive (I cant install ANYTHING on full drive) I see it is dump files created by my remote access program (dump files) whew... Now I have to figure out how to stop this..

There is CERTAINLY a fix beyond replacing the PC.

Use Tree Size Viewer, check what's using the space. Could be system restore or something like that.

You should certainly be able to drill into the well known various temp directories and clear files, in order to get enough free space to install WinDirStat or WizTree or something similar.

This will point you in the right direction.

How about cloning to a larger HDD? The amount of time you've spent on this project so far, would be cheaper for the client just to hit him 90 bucks for a larger HDD and an hour to clone it over.

Lol, the dmp files are 35 mb and creating new ones everyfew minutes... but I just put the drive on another pc and got the directory info..

How much ram? If he has a 30GB hard drive with 256MB of memory, no wonder he is losing space. At that size/ram configuration, every MB starts to matter.

Slaving it to another machine, or using a utility disk, you should be able to "delete" enough of the stuff off of that drive for it to work reliably for a few min at least. If you see that your remote program is making dumps every few min, then uninstall it at least to see if that's the problem. Then worry about restoring your ability to remote in.

Ok guys the offending program is Instant Housecall for some reason it is creating 25mb dump files every 30 seconds or more... The drive size if 75 gb and 50 gb free, so know wonder it is filling in a fast manner.

I sent the dump logs to Corey and someone is analyzing them as we speak.

True. This is a great tool that I know how to use and it's saved my ass many a time, but if I don't use it for a while then I forget to use it when it's most needed. It's even part of D7 which I use every day but I still forget about it because we have too many tools.

Unfortunately nothing supportive... Instant housecall says something is broken on the offending computer.. (SMH)

So I just cant use IHC on this machine..
