I use ddrescue for failingt hard drives. I have an HP AIO 20 come in the other day. It would not boot up. Said it couldn't find the hard drive. I open up the AIO and hook the hard drive to my bench machine. Booted up parted magic. I run the lsblk cmmand to see what device to copy and it wasnt listed. Instead of /dev/sdXX it said loop254 and loop XXX(can not remember). Restarted a couple times and even tried another bench PC. Does this mean it bad hard drive or is it something else. Also doesnt show up in gsmartcontrol.

If a new device does not even show up in /dev it's probably going to the next level of recovery. dmesg is another tool I've used to look a devices in Linux.

What I normally do in my shop:

I take the drive over to my computer with hot swap bays in it (2). Plug the drive in and before I hit the power button for the Hot swap bay I type into a term window:

tail -f /var/log/kern.log <hit enter>

Now turn on the hot swap bay and watch the log entries in real time. Then I can highlight what I want to save with my mouse to a text file or whatever.

Could be the drive is just toast.
