Well, I can confirm that what Google is turning on automatically can still be turned off in the Account Security Settings.

I've already had one person asking to have 2FA turned off. I expect more.

Which is ridiculous. Google will only prompt you once per device. The last time I got a 2FA prompt was when I got a new phone back in July. It's NOT an inconvenience. Having your Gmail account hacked is.

It does break the capability to log in having only the password and no phone, though.

I'm authenticated through Google Everytime I use my thumbprint to unlock my phone. Any hacker would be logging in from a new device and that would trigger my phone.
