Working on a program for sale that retrieves the windows product key from a local machine or from a slaved hard drive that has windows installed on it but doesn't boot. It also attempts to get the version of windows (i.e. home/pro)
Which is good for a tech in case he has to reinstall Windows/or do a repair install when customer doesnt have their original cd and dont know which version of windows they had. Its something i made out of neccessity.
So far i've tested with XP and its working good. I programmed it in Assembly, the file size is only 20kb uncompressed and is portable

Is this something that, you as a tech, would pay $5 for? I use the funds to help pay for my webserver.

im thinking about adding detection on what type of reinstall cd is needed for the key too

Thanks in advance.

I thought we develop apps/programs to help one another out on a day-to-day basis..

Don't see anyone else charging for there apps/scripts.. Abe, Jory, Chris, Joe3k...

But yeah.. does it do anythin' different from the other similar programs that makes it worth $5 ?

It is a recession ..
Thats a big bag of rice; and if I was on Survivor; that would feed my tribe for a month lol

Yes there are both free and paid for versions of such software already out there.

Most have more functionality than you describe - eg changing the key would useful to a tech.

Look on Ebay, there are quite a few competitors around the same price - they seem to survive.

Personally I find that many of these retrieval tools work well on an already working system, but have trouble with a seriously screwed one - the exact type you need it for.

The other problem I see is that you seem to be calling the GUI, which may not be accessible. Around half the available tools only work from within Windows. Again not much use on a non booting system.

Mine works on a non-booting system that has been slaved to a working computer.

I know there is free alternatives out there that get the key locally and from offline drives
Magic Jelly Bean for some reason couldnt load the offline hive when i tried it on xp and win7
and mine works fine.

In essence there is no difference between running from a bootable CD and slaving the drive to another pc or even installing a second copy of windows on the existing.

I am pleased to hear you are confident your program works on screwed machines. I am not getting at you but trying to help with your product development, which is what I assume you started this thread for.

Like DR Micro I would be happy (and have done) to pay for the right functionality.

I made my comment having in the past tried a whole list of commercial and free finders on screwed (Vista in particular) machines and discovering that the likes of OHP and jellybean do not always work.

You did not answer my question about key changing. You will need to learn to pay more attention to questions if they are from real customers.

right now it doesnt support key changing, its main purpose it to recover the keys, ill try to add the ms office support soon too

as i said i made this tool mainly for my own use first and thought it might be a good tool for others as well , im all about free software when available but $5 is not much to ask for something

i dont even think magic jelly bean can change keys either

I've used the other products mentioned in this thread. And if yours ends up doing office keys also then sure I would spend $5 for it.

There is a line between helping others and giving your time. I've guessing (not being a programmer) that you actually have invested some decent time into developing this product/software...to that i'm willing to pay. Will make my tech's job easier and $5 is well worth it.

If that will work on a 64-bit version install as well as 32, I would give you $5. If it work well on offline drives. Keep us up to date on your progress and if you need a beta tester.:)

i finished the local version which should get the local windows key and office key

http://whatsmypass.com/bones.exe

If any of the textboxes dont populate please send let me know which textbox doesnt have results,your Windows Version,and Office Version

and if possible open regedit and go to:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\XX.0\Registration\
and let me know the the numbers between the { }'s

Running Vista Home Basic and Office 2000 (upgraded from Office 97) as well as Outlook 2002 as a separate install, for my Dell Axim.

Vista fields display okay, but Office fields are all blank. I have the following reg keys:

10.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Registration\{911A0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}

12.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0014-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-002F-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

By the way, License Crawler finds:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Registration\{911A0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}
Product ID: [snipped]
Product Type: OEM Version
Serial Number: [snipped]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0014-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
Product ID: [snipped]
Product Type: 328 Full packaged product
Product Name: Microsoft Office Professional 2007
Serial Number: [snipped]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-002F-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
Product ID: [snipped]
Product Type: 364 Full packaged product
Product Name: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007
Serial Number: [snipped]

Which tells me the 12.0 is the residual from a trial install of Home & Student, lonng since uninstalled.

Hope that helps.

Vista Ultimate SP2, Office 2007 Standard SP2
Vista key displays, Office key blank

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0031-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

i missed a { in the office2007 keypath thats why it wasnt showing,i was testing on my 2k3 install ,but it should work now,
now i gotta figure out about people that had more than one install of office
since it tends to overwrite the textbox with the latest key , so your old 97 install wont show

Just dug out the original Office 97 CD and it's Product Key is not among those listed by License Crawler or your program. The 10.0 key is for the MS Outlook that came with my Dell Axim.

Neither of the two 12.0 Product Keys Crawler finds (for Office 2007 Pro and 2007 Home & Student) matches that of the Office 2000 Pro Upgrade I currently have installed. Your program lists the Key for Office 2007 Pro, which is no longer installed Neither of the Office 2007 programs appears in Add/Remove programs. The Office 2000 Pro upgrade appears in Add/Remove programs but doesn't appear anywhere in Crawler's output. Weird. :confused:

Edit: Nirsoft's ProduKey finds all the entries (2007 Pro, 2007 H&S, Office 2000 and Outlook 2002) but the Product Key field for Office 2000 is blank. MagicJellyBean fiinds the Outlook 2002 key only under the Office tab. Looks like Nirsoft's ProduKey is the program of choice for this task.

changed around the GUI and just made it a multi-lined edit box that way if you had more than one office install it'd get them all

try downloading it again
