Hi I have a customer who tried to update their drivers because they got a new monitor, and managed to infect themselves with a virus. I got rid of the virus but now when i put the right drivers on the device it has all sort of weird flashes and squares and doesn't work properly. but once i delete the drivers and it doesn't recognize the display adapter it works again.

Ive tried the newer drivers as well as the older stuff on dell's website. I am tempted to just leave it with unrecognized drivers but who knows how long that will last. Any ideas?

Have you searched out and deleted all folders, files and traces left behind by uninstalling the drivers? I've seen lots of stuff left behind from things like Nvidia driver packages (most of which are configuration tools, anyway, and not just drivers). It could be some conflict caused by that, but more likely something left behind was corrupted by the virus infection. If they're not playing games or running progs that rely on 3D effects, you're probably fine just letting Windows manage it.

Does the graphics card show up in control panel with no drivers loaded or drivers loaded but unrecognized (i know you said it had unrecognized drivers, just trying to clarify).
Is it possible that windows has loaded compatible drivers that work and you are subsequently loading drivers that are not compatible?
I have known this to happen myself when installing devices, especially graphics cards, windows update suggests an updated driver for the graphics and when downloaded and installed you can no longer configure the display settings and end up rolling back to the previous driver.
Long shot but worth thinking about.

well it says VGA CONTROLLER not recognized, it works in VGA mode as well as safe mode with out without the drivers. IF I do the windows update, get the old (2005ish) drivers from dell or the "new" drivers it works until i go into normal mode, where parts of the screen wont load, update, whatever. it flickers. the monitor turns on and off all the time.. but then i go back to safe mode.. delete the drivers.. and it works again.. Device doctor doesn't recognize it needing a driver..

I thought I removed all the nvidia stuff but I will check.. IT is very strange.. I am doing a big virus scan just in case.

I've seen this several times with nvidia 5200 FX cards. Know of others who have as well.
The card is shot, maybe a mmry problem I'm nto sure but its a bad card, swap it and you'll be good to go.

I've had a similar problem with an ATI card of my own. I ended up RMA'ing the video card and the new one worked fine with the same drivers. Like others said it is likely a hardware problem that is not shown until any kind of intensive rendering etc is used.
