I need recommendations for a gaming headphone/microphone combo that will work with a laptop.
All the ones I've seen need a speaker and mic port.
Laptops have no mic port because of the inbuilt mic.

There are several that have USB connectors but they dont/wont work (not sure why).

TIA

Thanks, but I've already tried this and it doesnt work because the laptop doesnt have (afaia) a "combo" port.
It's only an audio out port.

Don't work at all, or don't work within the game? Is there a sound source selection setting in the game config? You'll probably have to specify the USB audio as the default device (Windows), or perhaps disable integrated audio in the BIOS (if exposed).

Can't understand why a USB headset wouldn't work. We have deployed literally hundreds over the last 18 months for Teams/Zoom usage. One of the few cases where "Plug & Play" actually applies.

Granted they weren't gaming headsets (mostly Jabra Evolve) but surely they work in the same way.

If the laptop doesn't have a combo port then I don't see any other option than USB. You either get a USB headset or use a USB to headphone/mic port adapter like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Speaker-Headphone-Microphone-External-Compatible/dp/B00NMXY2MO

This. Plugging up a USB headset is adding a second sound system to the PC. You have to select it in the sound icon by the clock or disable the onboard sound.

Tried the USB option and set/reset/set again ad infinitum the sound settings.
Also tried the BIOS for any audio settings but still doesn't work.
I'm wondering now if Dell has some crap software on the machine that its defaulting to.
I'll talk to the client about removing any Dell rubbish and see if it makes a difference.

Dells can have quite aggressive audio and touchpad drivers, that don't always play well with others. Disable the integrated audio in Mixer app or Device Manager?

But what results did you get? No USB sound at all? USB sound until reboot? Works in other Windows programs but not in game?

Windows and Linux both typically allow USB audio devices to override any built in devices. That's been default behavior since at least Windows 7.

Specific software limitations aside, when you insert the USB Audio device, what does the tray icon for sound tell you? Is the audio device showing as USB? If it is, that means Windows has defaulted to the USB device, which is good. The next part will be to determine why it doesn't work.

The majority of USB audio devices don't use or need drivers, as they typically use chips that have been around for ages. (Some high end devices or mixer boards may require drivers, but those are a far cry from most simple USB headsets.)

It sounds as if there is another software issue in Windows preventing USB audio. If specific drivers are installed for the built in audio, try uninstalling them, as Windows has a fairly good ability to get basic audio drivers working, and you may find after that USB audio works.

Realtek usually doesn't have issues. Connexant typically is full of issues and you are better off using the generic or Windows Update version of the driver. Intel used to have audio chips, but if I recall, they were rebadged Connexant chips. IDT is another audio chip supplier, both them and Connexant both are weird, typically seen in prebuilt machines. I prefer Realtek.

Oh, and if this machine was an upgrade to 10, all the more reason to ditch the drivers as sometimes it's still remnants of the Windows 7/8 versions which can and do cause issues.

Never seen that before. Usually the rule is, if it's a single audio port then it's a combo one. Did you look up the laptop model specs?

I've found headphones (without mic) are hard to find with IT suppliers. Chain stores sell expensive ones, so I get asked about cheaper headphones all the time. I have sourced some before and keep a few in stock for these customers. I sourced them from DJCity or similar online stores, where you will find low cost "DJ Headphones" that don't have mic.

There was a period between Windows 7/Windows 8 where Mic inputs were removed (especially on low to mid consumer models). As a result, there are a number of laptops that don't have any means of mic input other than using an external USB device. Business class may have used TRRS, my Panasonic Toughpad has it as does my Lenovo T420. But those were not universal and sometimes like mt T420, the speakers work but the mic input doesn't even with adapters or a proper TRRS mic.

But now as a general rule, most laptops and even Desktops for that matter use TRRS.

If you are in Canada or the US, Dollarama has cheap headsets around $4 that actually aren't complete crap. It's the over ear ones, not the folding ones. Typically they are advertised as having extra "Bass". They comes in White, Red, Black.

Back in the day KOSS made decent headphones that didn't break the bank, I think my first pair was like around $70, I'm sure they are cheaper now. Back then they came with a lifetime guarantee which I used several times.

What model is this laptop?
Dell G5 5500. The inbuilt microphone is so sensitive I can here the neighbors dogs barking as if they were in the room. It picks up birdsong from outside, distant voices, TV from 50 meters away so clearly I can repeat what is said - but is absolutely diabolical at picking up a human voice only 30~50 cm from it.
Its so muffled and loud/scratchy/hissy and distorted that its infuriating.

Soo...I charge too much per hour to persist with an annoyance.

It was decided that her brother would purchase the laptop for general use (he's not a gamer) and he was also quite happy to pay almost new price for it. It is only 7 months old after all.

I have just finished building a gaming rig for the client. Her Razor headphone/microphone works perfectly and gives a clear tone to the voice without the static/hiss/background noise.
I cant hear dogs barking or birdsong etc now, just a clear voice.

Everyone (especially me) is happy.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and workarounds/fixes etc.

Hmm that model has a combo jack in the specs so I'm not sure why a regular headset with a matching plug wouldn't have worked.

Edit: just saw in related you posted about this model with a similar issue. Is that the same machine as this thread?

Lots of reported problems with Dell G5 audio on the Dell support forums. Several reports that the Realtek Audio Console has jack detection disabled (by default? More likely, switched off – 'Do not ask again' – the first time something was plugged in) ...

What did you wind up getting? My son has the Astro a40 TR headset. Since he's away at college I can't check but I'm pretty sure they were usb based. His also has a removeable mic as well.

What did you wind up getting?
The client has had the headphones for some time. They are "Razor" brand but I have no idea what model.
They came with a USB splitter as well as a dual audio/mic connector.

They work perfectly with the new tower - that's all that matters now.

I did see/read some information about that on a forum (not sure where now) and it was the case on this laptop.
I set it to announce when anything was plugged in.

No, it's an identical laptop I sold to another client.
I bought 5 units in a fire sale (super discounted) from one of my suppliers.
