I have a g5 that came in yesterday. It come in with a fan issue. It sounds like a jet engine when the g5 is on. From the moment it turn on to the moment it is turned off. Also it is really kicking out the air. The computer is 5 or 6 feet from the wall is constantly blowing all the papers hanging on it. The client wants it quiter. I have look at all the fans and they are really clean. Any ideas on how to lower the noise?

Its a powermac g5 PowerPC g5 2.3GHz and 4Gigs of ram.

Thanks in advance

Might be a problem with the Ambient Temp Sensor board that controls the speed of the fans.
See if it's covered in dust, maybe pull it and reseat it.

Also it looks like one of the ones that is water cooled. I can not get to the cpu area without breaking a rivet it looks like. Any idea for a work around?

Those models often required having the cooling system recalibrated. As @altrenda said make sure everything is clean. Do a google on "apple g5 temperature calibration procedure". I'll look later and see if I can find some docs on this.

can you buy these batteries locally? like at a radioshack?

The old RS, yes. The new ones are glorified cell phone stores with a few cables, etc thrown in. At least the two I've seen. If you have one of those battery chain places, like batteries plus, or a full serve photography store they might have them. 3.6vdc lithium. Make sure to take the old one with you for sizing.

There is a radio shack around here that does have a lot of battery stuff still, but i know what you mean.

Ok got a new pram battery fixed that issue. Reset pram and nvram. DIdnt help. Have a old ASD i am pretty sure the one for this g5. ASD 2.5.8 but when i run the thermal calibration it says cpu intake fan speed error check the inner door is secure and in place and rerun the test

Also after that i went to individual tests and tested all the fans. They all fail saying the are running to slower than it should 7. But they are running full speed. If it were a lighter machine it would be flying! \

Also tested the CPU0 and it passed no problem.

I am really beating my head agaist the wall at this point any help would be greatly appreciated!!

and as a side not the battery i put in is either drain or there is another problem. Because i had it unplug for the afternoon and now the time is and date is set to 1974

Did you check the voltage on the old and new battery?

old battery is dead barely reads anything. new battery reads 3.59V. same model number and everything. But will not keep the daqte. Does this mean bad motherboard?

Sounds like it. Did you follow all of the various reset procedures in the SM? Are there any utilities in the ASD that may help. Been ages since I've looked at those so I do not remember. Also, did you strip out all of the extra stuff like HD's, etc. when testing? You know the drill. Strip down the machine to the bare essentials and then build up from there.
