So my inlaws had bought a new computer a few months back because they said there were tons of viruses on there other one and when it got to the xp page they could not do anything. Well I have told them about my plans to learn and hopefully start a computer repair business. Today they come to the house with the old computer and said i can use the parts in it if i want cause it is of no use to them. I plug it all in and when i get to the windows screen i can not click on anything. The mouse icon moves and right click works as it brings up the desktop arrange icons menu but no other program will start. I plug in a new mouse and presto i have a new computer . All they would have needed to do is buy a new mouse cause the left click button just didnt work. Computer had some malware on it and a virus that i cleaned up and it works like a champ now. Too funny. And no i will not be telling them that they could have bought a $30 mouse instead of a $1500 computer. Lesson of the day is: usually the simplest solution is the right one.

I've had this happen at a clients before, pretty funny, but the guy was relieved, because it could have been a lot worse.

I was thinking along the same lines. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to accept something like this without telling the people that the computer is fine. I pride myself in being honest, and hiding the truth is just as bad as lying.

I would have told them, If you are wanting to make a business out of this then you might want to start with Ethics Now!!! The Ethical thing would have then to let them know what was wrong with their computer, not Hide it....IMHO

I probably would have said "Hey, it turns out the main problem was it just a broken mouse. It still needs to be cleaned of viruses and whatnot, but did you want it back?"

Chances are they would let you keep it anyway since it was low enough priority to give to you in the first place rather than choosing to fix it. That would have just sat better morally if it was me.

Its more the fact that you have already stated that you are DELIBERATELY not going to tell them what was wrong with their computer.

I'm with Bryce on this; I would do the same. To me its just morally wrong.

Each to their own I suppose. But I just know its not going to sit well with this honest community
