Freezing When Unmuting Volume

Actually, this question is about one of our in-house PCs that is running XP PRO sp3.
I muted the speakers using the volume control in the Taskbar a couple of months ago.
Now, every time that I try to unmute the volume, the computer freezes.
The Task Manager displays 0% CPU usage but it is unresponsive so the information may be incorrect.
All assistance is appreciated because I really need the speakers working.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the 'SoundMax Integrated Digital High Definition Audio' resolved the issue.
