It's been 21 years since my last confession.

Today I have purchased a prebuilt gaming PC.

And even worse it was an Alienware!

My current custom built PC has a R9 290x that was on it's way out and finally kicked the bucket a couple days ago. Was looking to replace it with a 1070ti and of course the price for those, if you can find it in stock anywhere are about $750.

I found I could buy a new Alienware Aurora R7 with a 1070ti, 16gb DDR4, and a much newer i5 6 core cpu than the one I have for $1000. I have SSDs to throw in and the mb has an M.2 slot so I will eventually grab a Samsung 1tb m.2 SSD to replace the 2.5s I have.

The case doesn't look as ugly as I usually expect from Alienware systems, but I think all the hardware used is off the shelf stuff so I could probably swap it all into my Define R5 case.

Will probably toss the 290x and use the rest of the system as a FreeNas + Plex server to handle my Blu-ray and, eventually, UHD rips.

But man, a sad day when a life long system builder chose a prebuild PC over custom making one. Thanks Crypominers and NAND shortage.

Okay, this isn't that bad, but it can't go unpunished. Write out 20 Moore's Laws in binary. On a chalkboard! No coding and printing! And no building a robot to do it for you!

EDIT: Actually now that I've thought about it building a robot to do it for you is totally fair game. That would more than make up for even this atrocity.

I bought a Cyber Power PC when the new Intel Pentium 4 with HYPER threading and windows xp was still a thing, 2003 I think. I had it up and running up until 3-4 years ago and the only reason it's not still running is cause I stopped using it. It still had the original hard drive when I put it down.

As a penance you'll have to complete all the levels of Left4Dead 2 on "expert" with only a pistol, without dying!
Oh and you get only 1 health pack per level! o_O

Y'all hatin' hard on me. But I know, I deserve it :(
How about a pic or model # so we can see how not that ugly it is.
Remember, the "not that ugly" is relative to their old designs.

So what you're really saying is "I paid $250 for a motherboard, current i5, 16GB of RAM, plus a generic HD and power supply and an ugly case."
Yep, and proud of it!
If bought separately:
RAM: ~$190
i5 8400: ~$195
MB: ~$85
1TB HDD: ~60
Win 10 Pro: $199
AIO CPU Liquid Cooler: ~$80
WiFi AC / Bluetooth 4.0 card: ~$25
Cheap ugly case: Priceless

Total if purchased separately : $834

Well...when it blows up in your face in 12 months, you're going to seriously wonder whether saving $100 was really worth it. You basically bought a $1,000 case.
Shucks, and I'm replacing the case!

Considering prices on newegg for 8GB 1070 TIs have jumped to $899 now, That would make the total cost to build this system myself $1733. Plus I'd lose the ON-SITE warranty (to see a Dell tech walk into my place while I'm fixing computers to fix my computer would be hilarious, especially after I take a call and loudly announce my price that will undoubtedly be several times what poor Dellman is making with this job).

Or I could save $100 and get only the graphics card and insert that into my PC that has several year old hardware thats all probably getting ready to kick the bucket too.

Jeebuz if that's an "ugly" case then I don't know what a "pretty" case is!
I like it.

Ok.. you're allowed two health packs per level....:)

...and those 4000 series Service Mechanoids are hard to find now, so keep it as a classic!
I'll keep it as my FreeNAS server case, safely hidden away in the basement on the unfinished side.

I prefer less conspicuous cases like the Define R5 that I have now. The less lights on it the better IMO. I live in a house built in the 60s, Sci-Fi looking stuff doesn't mesh and just looks gaudy to me.

Jeesh. I almost forget about Newegg. I buy 99% of my stuff from my local Microcenter. Just picked a 1070ti from Microcenter for $620:

But honestly, who the hell really needs a 1070TI? I run most games at 60+ FPS on my 75" 4K TV with a GTX 970. I see no pressing need to upgrade even if graphics cards were cheap. I would've just bought one of these KICKASS GTX 980's for $340:

You really can't get much worse quality than OEM stuff from Dell, HP, etc. Even a $50 motherboard is better quality. I would have rather spent about $1,100 with this GTX 980 card (which looks identical to the Nvidia branded FOUNDERS edition card!) and gotten a good quality computer.

EDIT: Yeah, I just looked it up and the GTX 1070ti is only 20% faster than the GTX 980. Paying TWICE as much for a 20% speed bump is a bad deal.
