No more system image backup and apparently File History will be gone too. With a large home user base, I typically recommend people use Microsoft's free back-up tools, usually in conjunction with Google photos to keep the family pictures doubly safe. Any good free alternatives to recommend?

Does full system image or file-level backups. Versioning. Email reports. Has a simple GUI. It's better than a lot of paid solutions tbh.

I can see many customers coming in saying backups don't work or system crashes and they are like, I have backups. Hmmmm. Hopefully they at least warn folks.
Update: So there is no mention of file history, so no doubt file based backups will be fine, but MS is considering removing image based backups. In other words, if your clients use an image so they can restore Windows from a backup set, that feature may be on the chopping block soon.
That being said, I think in a way that is a sensible option as that differentiates Server/Business from consumer. So in the long run, that's a good way to clean up that distinction.
I also was shocked to find that apparently there is still code from Outlook Express hanging around? Embarrassing....

After reading that image based backups are gone, I did more research and found several articles that mention File History will be gone as well, such as this one https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-killing-file-history-windows-10-fall-creators-update
I guess Microsoft wants all of their users to keep all of their data in OneDrive, or else find a third party backup solution. Not really sure what the corporate strategy is in removing a very valuable feature from their OS - guess it's meant to push everybody towards using a Microsoft account, but that's not the best backup solution for most home users. And we all know that image based backups can be real lifesavers - the addition of that feature in Windows 7 was a big step forward, now they are going backwards.

Screensavers are now dead. The end of an era.
Powershell 2.0 scripts will no longer work. I can imagine that will piss off quite a few business users. They didn't have to deal with that crap with the old command prompt. Heck, stuff that worked 20+ years ago still work in Windows 7. Powershell 2.0 is only 9 years old. Just another reason I want nothing to do with Powershell. The commands and syntax make absolutely NO sense, and now they're pulling this crap.

Veeam, is that free for business use? Got a few servers I would not mind trying this on if so.
May have to test it out. Thanks for the heads up. Have a few servers at my day job that we currently do use the Windows backup system on. Maybe this will be a good alternative.

As far as I'm aware it's fine to use in business - there is nothing on their site or supporting documentation to suggest otherwise. Plus they make a point of advertising it works on servers, workstations, endpoints etc... not the terminology you would commonly use when targeting home users.
I imagine they provide it free in the hopes you will "like what you see" and purchase their other products.

Likely as one of those god awful UWP apps that will basically make it a shell of what it is.
(disclaimer: I am on a huge anti-windows 10 kick right now because lately it's been causing me twice the workload and thrice the headache due to it's "I know what's best for you" operating procedures.)
I too have read that File History is being removed. It makes no sense as my clients, what's left of them, use this valuable backup tool.
Anyway, I just contacted MS support and the agent said "we will still be able to use FH in the Creators Update."

Right but what do you do when the support is up on that and you need to move on? I agree though. I liked the previous versions settings in older versions of windows better than file history because for one you didn't need an extra drive. What do you do though?

You have to create a Microsoft account if you want to install Office - but you don't have to use it for anything else. I guess the real answer is another way to get users to USE a MS account.
