"fake" static IP?

I am really interested in using Ultra VNC's single click remote help software. However, my ISP (bresnan) won't give me a static IP unless I have a business account, which of course costs more money. This is really stupid in my opinion and I'm even considering switching to another ISP because of it. But before I do that, I was wondering if there is a way to have some sort of "fake" static IP address? Some kind of service that tracks my dynamic IP and redirects my "fake" static IP to my dynamic IP. Does anyone know of any reliable service that can do this for me? Or should I just switch ISPs entirely and get a real static IP?

You are going to find that almost every ISP does this. They also block ports on residential accounts such as port 80 to stop you from hosting sites and what not.

There is a service that does what you are looking for, but for some reason the name has COMPLETELY slipped my mind. I am sure someone will have the name.

thanks for the replies! I'll check these out and hopefully I can get one working. I'm currently using CrossLoop but I don't really like how there's a whole community of cheaper techs. And being able to skin UVNC single click with my logo is a really nice feature.

It's kind of silly how often people ask about something like this on these forums... I'm starting to think that some sort of search function might be a good addition to the forums. :D ;)

Sorry about that. I'll make sure to search next time before I ask a technical question. :)

No harm...It just seems like Dyndns.org came up a few times in just the past few days! :D

I setup a dyndns account, configured the single click application, forwarded the ports on my router, and began vnc viewer in listen mode. However when I tested the SC application, nothing happens on my computer. The SC side gets the bubble messages and everything, but no connection is established. Isn't something supposed to pop up on my computer? I don't really know what could be going wrong. Would someone please review my helpdesk.txt file?

Just a quick glance, it looks ok. Does it work without the dyndns? I'd suspect a network setting before the helpdesk.txt

Well I realized that I forgot to forward ports on my cable modem, so I'm guessing that's why its not working. I tried to access the modem to configure it but was denied access. I called bresnan to see what's up and apparently this model isn't configurable. So I have to buy a new modem to use Single Click. Grrrr......

Is it a cable modem or a cable router, if it's definitely a modem then it's a pretty simple device and takes what comes in via the cable and sends it out via the ethernet port. There wouldn't be any kind of firewall or NAT as that would normally be handled a router connected to the LAN side.

Its a motorola surfboard SB5100. Its definitely a modem. So I shouldn't need to configure this at all?

Like it has been said, nothing to configure as far as that modem goes. What router are you using? Does it work when you access it by dynamic ip from the outside? Its most likely your router or firewall.

If it works by dynamic ip, then your dyndns is setup incorrectly.

are we seriously having to teach you how port forwarding works? and how to get a dns name? :p

are you trying to test the vnc on yourself or are you using a remote computer?

Lol I know hot to port forward, but I didn't know about dyndns until I asked. I'm testing by having my mom download the SC exe and try and connect. I haven't tried using my IP instead of dns but I will try tomorrow and report back. If it doesn't work with my IP then I'll try it with someone else to make sure its not her network.

dyndns.com and custom DNS

that way you can use support or remote-support or rs.{your-domain} and give a really top notch professional look

Far as i know you dont need your ISP to assign you an IP adress. I wrote a program a while ago that you can use without the need to contact your ISP (far as i know). The program will get your assigned IP for you...You can get it here http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=14956&start=0

It is 100% SC based and you DONT need to have UVNC installed...It's all included in the package ;)
Just read the documentation!

Hope this helps ;)
