“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Facebook VP Andrew Bosworth told Techcrunch, explaining the firm’s move into operating systems. “We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”

Just what the world needs.

NOT!

You would think that they would have learned from their Facebook phone failing this would be a bad idea. I can’t imagine how they are going to try and sell this and make it more convenient than the app itself.

Any time I hear about someone wanting to create a new OS I think back to when I worked in the oil business. My employer, Schlumberger, decided to switch from custom made analog equipment developed over the years for the primary profit making division to digital. And by profit I mean they used to make over 40% profit after tax in some years. So they thought they were hot ch!t managers and engineers when in reality they just had no competition in many places. And charged accordingly.

Since they were exclusively DEC in those days they decided to go with PDP's, which already had a robust software ecosystem between DEC and their partners. So some puddin head, PHd, at Austin Systems Center decided they could do better by writing their own OS from scratch. Four years and 75 million later, during a typical management shuffle, a new Director arrived in Austin. He was like, WTF, why have we been re-inventing the wheel and still have no results after 4 years. No surprise that pet project was shutdown right away.

“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” What does that actually mean?

It means that they want to get so ingrained into our lives that the next generation will be using it without making a choice.

WTF... the next generation has space for us? Because the next generation is going to lack a web browser?

If only we lived in a nation that actually exercised its anti-trust powers properly to prevent tech companies from scope creeping themselves into vertical monopolies...

They have the right person heading it up but no doubt it will just be a re-hash of some Linux distro.
