Facebook Ads

It may be the area. My wife has a physical retail space, upscale resale/clothing boutique type things. If she does not market with Facebook for a month, she gets a lot less in sales and people ask if she's closed. If she markets it by targeting nearby towns etc, shes does better.

and people ask if she's closed.
Consumers take social media advertising for granted so much that it is concerning. If every consumer would pay 10 cents per dollar used to advertise, I guarantee they will remember/know everything is going on with any business - physical location, website address, what products, price ranges... The entitlement for information at people's nose is ridiculous.

I get what you are saying. My wife has posted on her page, we do not give out pricing online. The idea is that she wants to get people to come in and make physical contact, get them curious and to establish a connection with the item she posts. She still CONSTANTLY gets people asking prices, even though her disclaimer says she won't.

My ad does not have pricing just a link to book a free consult. Now my guy and I are thinking we will do some A/B testing with LinkedIn.

One thing I learned about working with someone for free, is if they get tired of helping for free, they can just drop out. My guy did that, but only after we decided to do LinkedIn. I think he got excited, then got unexcited. So yea, it died. I would maybe consider it again but business is busy again. It was pretty slow around tax time.

haha - I get that. I have had various little free offers of help with some project or another in the past, I've only accepted once and I was really careful about NOT turning it into a job for that person. We'd be hypocrites if we charge our customers by the minute for help while expecting free help ourselves. :p

I'm going to dip my toe into this water, I've seen a slowdown in the residential side of the business lately, we'll see how FB Advertising goes. Being careful as I did not do well with Google ads when I tried them before. I broke even $-wise, but it was a ton of work - not worth the effort.

Is your website on WordPress? I am doing a ton of content SEO blogs right now. I just did some in March, figured it was time for another round.

I don't really like ads in general, but thought I would try the FB thing, it's not for every business.

I am involved in 3 different businesses in the IT/Computer business and have been for nearly 30 years.

Computers/Services to the home/retail market - we started using FB adds and posts about 18 months ago and they have certainly helped without costing too much. We do have a marketing consultant create the adds and posts which certainly has contributed to our success with it. Some of the most successful posts were ones we put up about the pain we have seen some customers go through because the didn't backup and lost photos/data, being ripped off by non certified repair agents and so forth. Real stories based on real empathy we had for our clients - customers want to know this and a real local storey is more interesting than manufactured spin.

IT Consulting / Managed Services to business clients - we have used FB adds and posts but with much less success. Our biggest success in this space is email marketing to our client base. Constantly educating them on issues to be aware of (for example whenever there is a Cryptolocker type virus hitting the streets we send everyone a warning), changes in technology that could be of benefit them, etc. It is always a soft message, never a hard sell as we have a relationship we respect. We then leverage our reputation for referrals, but it is still tough winning new clients in this space.

Niche/Customised Solutions - we have recently developed a complete solution suite for hospitality businesses in regional Australia. Direct mail has worked but is expensive. We have just started highly targeted google adwords and had some initial success, but too early to tell. I do know of business with very niche vertical solutions are doing well building leads from adwords, but there is a fair bit to learn to be able to leverage adwords effectively. As such we have a consultancy firm helping us build this at the moment.

Hope this helps a bit!

My question is, if I were to invest $1000 into an ad, which medium would get me the highest return? As I see it, unless you are selling widgets, advertising to those who are not actively seeking your product/service is wasted money that could be put to better use.

If I have $1k for advertising, I would invest in Google Ad. I feel most people searching for Google is looking for a product or service. Most users on Facebook are just surfing the web, When is the last time anyone initially use Facebook to search for a service or product. I mainly use Facbook and other Social media for SEO.

I have, on a few occasions, had clients tell me that they chose to use my company's services because they saw all the positive reviews on Google and Facebook. But, I've never had anyone find us by searching Facebook for data recovery services.

Just a quick comment - A few years ago one of my daughter's IT classes used my company and Google Ads for a case study. (They also tested a few makeovers of my website.) When the ads ran Google Analytics went crazy with traffic but nothing came through to me. When the ads stopped the Analytics stopped and no residual traffic to me was detectable. Wasted money?

In my opinion the $1,000 would be much better spent in SEO and other ways (back links, etc.) to boost your page organically. My web page appears first on Google for computer and network repair in my area but that was years after the University of Wisconsin project and due to customer reviews on Google, blogging with releases on Facebook and Twitter, etc. I find in my humble market it is the print media that leads them to my web page so I maintain a presence there also.

I agree 100% if the choice is between Google Ad's or SEO, I chose SEO. More return on your investment.
But since I can do SEO without spending any money, and I been given $1K that I have to spend, I' ll use it on Google Ads because I feel its the next best thing.

In reality, I only do Google Ads for 2 to 3 months when I'm starting an SEO project for a client. Just to give it a quick boost. Once SEO is in place, I either stop or reduce Google Ads.

That's not quite true, right?
Your time performing the SEO is an expense to the business entity. May be a lower expense compared to hiring somebody else, but it is still an expense. It is just not accounted for, because we are doing it ourselves in our businesses. So, should we add the hours doing it, then it can add up to quite a bit.

I guess, but I love SEO/challenges and consider it a hobby as well.

Tried ads, never got any calls from them. Lots of clicks with no results. Ended up with a couple of extra likes on the page, but I never get any interaction whatsoever (there's more chance you CTG like something rather than those people I got through advertising on FB) :D
I'm a starry eyed marketing student who just opened my PC Repair shop. So, I tried the "boost your page" ad with FB. I got a few likes and one share but no calls, no email, and no website visits...I put the ad on hold an may try again when I add more content.
