Eli the Computer Guy quits YouTube

Meh, for the last year he has been a whiny little *****. Acts like everyone owes him everything. Have a good time on your $5/mo website and good luck with that!

I thought he quit a year ago:

I liked his stuff quite a lot before he tried to be a "YouTube Personality". Basically he started talking about asinine crap that only 12 year old kids care about (picking internet fights with other YouTube Personalities) and even when talking about relevant tech stuff, he really cranked up his depressing, rambling, hyper cynical, blunt force sarcastic, hermit-like personality to the point where it made me uncomfortable just listening.

I've replaced him with Level1Techs where they know what they are talking about, stay focused, and are genuinely enthusiastic.

I was late to the party as far as Eli is concerned. Watched a couple of episodes and couldn't stand it to be honest, always whining.

I'd not really seen anything interesting come out for quite a while, anyway...

But, still, sorry to see him go, all opinions matter... :)

This guy was always whining about stuff that was totally irrelevant. Now he wants us to go to a website and pay $5 for more of this rubbish?
No thanks!

He had a lot of good info in his early youtube years. Now it's mostly just ranting. I enjoy listening from time to time but I find Louis Rossman's videos to be much more enjoyable as of late.

Can someone spare me the 6 minutes of watching him and tell me why he's leaving?
Hes not happy with the Youtube platform. It requires certain clickbaity things and working the algorithm to keep the videos visible.

This reminds me of Disneys recent pulling out of Netflix to put their stuff on their own platform.
There is an obvious gain for Disney since they can control their content and make more money, but whats the gain for us who have Netflix subscriptions? If they could provide a compelling reason to sign up to a new streaming subscription, sure. But so far all that happened was something was taken away.

Thats what appears to be happening here, he was in a nice convenient place, moved elsewhere and charged for it. No gain for us.

Are his non-Youtube videos better? If he could make a better product than what he was providing on Youtube then it could work, but as far as I can see the answer to that is no. In fact, most of his current videos on that site are about him bitching about Youtube and his audience.

Hes really not selling it either, his language is backwards. The most salesy positive thing he said on his site is "I can focus on the people", its all about him. He needs to say "I can create higher quality, better targeted content for you". Which is about us.

Of course, he kills all that by saying

"Im hoping Im gonna get a nice little attitude correction"
(because hes getting paid)

and

On the Youtube video "We'll either see you folks [on his site], or we wont see you. I dont care any more. Im done"

Neither of which inspires confidence in me.

Hes a good example of what not to do with your marketing. Make it about your customer and how it benefits them, not how it benefits you.

Also, if you dont have a passion for what you do, just get out of it.

I rarely have anything to do with BoobTube. Yes, I'm guilty of putting up some vids but just because it is so easy to share. Not sure I've ever listened to any of Eli's stuff but there are plenty who make money on that platform. I'm a big fan of cooking, especially BBQ/grilling. There's some group on YouTube, Southern US, who publish grilling and BBQ stuff. They were on some PBS show and mentioned about how they started to receive checks from YouTube. So I'm sure that plays into the equation if YT changes the equation.

So true. Rossman is like the perfect Internet Personality, honest, factual, still can have fun, and doesn't have an oerly high opinion of himself. He calls himself a "janitor" but he is actually really smart, especially in business acumen.

Yeah and even his non technical videos I generally like a lot of his view points on things.

You mean to tell me he was still making recent YouTube videos? I watched about 5 of his videos last year and I always felt they were super dated and boring as heck. The one that really makes me laugh is starting a computer business. lol

I still like Louis a lot, but even his videos are getting a bit aggravating. He has a large fanbase that came from 4Chan, and since he livestreams more than normal videos, he spends a lot of his time referencing memes and trolling trolls. Was funny for a couple videos, now its too much. His non-live videos are still good though.

iPad Rehab is where im at now. Maybe I'm just a hipster who only likes things before they get popular lol.
