Just sharing what happen to me...sold,(thought I sold) a laptop on ebay..got the official "your item sold" from ebay..got the official "payment awaiting deposit" from paypal..but it was all a spoof..and those alerts looked "exactly" like it came from ebay and paypal..what gave it away was the personal email I got from the knuckehead, he said he was an American in England on business, and the computer was a gift for his son in Nigeria..he even sent an extra $150 for shipping to sweeten the deal...yea ok...I was born at night but not last night...so took a couple of hours to clear it up with paypal and ebay but they have dealt with that exact scam before..if not for the email I would never have known..just a head's up..

Without that e-mail this would have been a hard one to see at first glance. Glad you caught it.

There was nothing obvious at first..what's tricky is paypal will not release your money until you ship your item and they get notified that it was shipped..so I could of easily shipped then started calling paypal asking for my money when they never would of gotten the money in the first place..I'd be out a computer and no money..so it would of eventually been found out, but, it would have been too late, I'd become a statistic..

With all the scams coming out of Nigeria I pitty the poor guy that actually has real business to do from there.

On a related note, why is it always Nigeria? Or South Africa? It's never Ireland, Germany, Australia, etc. Is there some actual reason? I see Nigeria and I immediately go SCAM, even if the poorly worded craptacular email somehow slipped by my radar.

I don't know but here's the copy of the one I got:

Because in Ireland, Germany, Australia, etc they would be prosecuted.

Your saying that the money doesn't actually hit your account until the item is shipped? I have never done this and have used paypal I don't ship until I get payment.

Well you are getting the payment in a sense; you get an alert from paypal that the member has paid paypal, but there is a caveat; you get an alert from paypal saying the member has paid and it is in your account. But you can't actually get the money released to you until you ship your item. Obviously, that's to prevent someone getting paid then never ship the item.

Then PayPal will take the hold off of the money in your paypal account or deposit it into your bank account...This scam had an identical web page alert sent to me, looks exactly like the page from paypal saying paypal had received his payment and it was in my account. But it was a forge and there was no money sent to paypal.

I have always had access to the money once it hit my paypal either this is new since I last used it or an option. Paypal can still reverse a payment if the payer elevates it to claim that it was not shipped and you would need proof.

Ok we must be dealing with different circumstances..because I've talked to PayPal about this because I have a separate account at the bank just for PayPal transactions and I have to "request" the money to be released once a sale is made thru PayPal or it just sits there..I wasn't getting paid and called them to ask why and that's when they told me about the having to verify it was shipped policy..don't know why situations are different..

No I got a notification from Ebay indicating the item was sold and it was off of the list of items to sell..this guy was good..so he must of bought it off of ebay then took of his name from the registration because he was no longer a registered member of ebay..ebay refunded my listing fee and then relisted it for sale..could not have caught him that way..
