 Hmm, ya think?

I just had a guy that didn't know why his computer was slow. He told him to defrag and has bar was all red. Lol. I said, that could be a problem.

I don't get people who say they don't defrag. I know some well respected techies who don't. Defraging works as well now as it ever did unless its an SSD. I have see some speed increases of maybe 20% or more just from running a defrag.

And then there's the average person that when you ask if they defrag they respond with "What's that?".

heheh, that's cool. might make a nice (nerdy) t-shirt design - just the striped bits. think i might do that and wear it when out on call.

customer: "what's that on your shirt?"

me: "your hard drive."

For. Defragging is no cure-all, but it is a part of normal maintenance, and has the three benefits I mentioned above.

Also, a thorough (both checkboxes) CheckDisk a few times a year. Attempting a read/write on every block gives the hard drive a chance to find failing sectors and swap them out with one of the spares on the drive.

The worst HD I had was a 4 gig that was completely red and the user only had 8% left on of space. I was extremely irritated. I had to move a bunch to stuff to the server which took forever and then defrag which ran over 4 hours.

When I do run chkdsk though I run it first then defrag.
I had a buddy do defrag on a bad HD (he did not know it was bad) after reboot the PC would not boot up. He was able to fix the boot up issue but some files were corrupted.
The husband came (he happed to be a computer engineer) and gave him a class on running chkdsk first then defrag.

multiple defrags?

Anybody ever run defrag multiple times? I never thought about it until I had one that looked like the pic. After a defrag it still looked a little rough so I ran it three more times before I got a clean looking graphic. Was I wasting time?

Sometimes I'll run two different ones if the first does not turn out as well as I would have liked.
