Hey guys,
Just wondering, does the local chamber of commerce charge money?. Im only just starting out so its not really something I can afford to engage in if cash is involved..

From what ive heard from the experienced business owners though it is fantastic for getting work and I can put money on it there will be tons of people with advice.

I live in the Uk if that is any help to anyone.

Thanks,
Luke

costs me about $200/yr, but the only ones involved are those with stores.... then again none of the mobile companies stick around for more than year or two. worth it in my book anyways

If in the uk then they hold evens through out the year which are either free or reduced in price for members. I made an effort to go more often to chamber events. So far I have one needing a new office networked and 2 more looking for support contracts.

Depending on your area....
In ours, it's 265/year (for organizations under 10 employees)...and events are usually 50 bucks a ticket...but they vary. I try to make it to a "BAH" (Business After Hours) event at least every other month. They hold them once a month, at different members places of business. Three months ago there was a BAH at a Mercedes Benz dealership. The next month there was one at an Audi car dealership. This month there was one at an art museum. Next month there is one at a big greenhouse/nursery/landscaping company (That I will go after as a client)

Yes...get good business. This morning I just had a good conversation with a guy at an insurance company, I met him 2x chamber events ago and struck up a converation with him. I'm going to their office this Wednesday to have a face to face, and see their network. I feel pretty good about getting him onboard as a client. Should lead to good steady monthly income...provide e-mail filtering services for him, offsite backup, regular network management/monitoring. Just those services alone will only take about 3 months to pay me back my Chamber fees for the year.

The local chamber for me was good but the people at the meetings are pretty much the same owners usually trying to sell stuff to new members. It takes a while but it may be worth it as it really depends on what kind of people are in your chamber. Now I just download the business directory from the chamber of commerce and go to businesses and introduce my self personally. Better then paying $200

Generally there is a charge. We used it the first few years but then the people started being the same over and over again at the meetings. Then it just became an expensive cost to have your name on their website. We stopped our membership and have not seen any ill effects. Besides all of their mixers are free to the public so we can still attend if desired.
