Each version has a write protect option, but I do not use it. If I recall my VE-200 had a physical slide switch for write protect, my VE-300 will go into write protect if you hold the backup button while plugging it in. As for the VE-400 I am not sure.
The problem I found with write protecting is that lots of tools I have on the drive wants to write something. If you opt to protect the drive, half of your tools will need to be copied to the client system and ran from there.

A couple techs. I used to work with got the 400 after they saw my 300 and I didn't care for the menu navigation, plus they look like a calculator to me, but the isn't that big of a deal.
I've decided to leave my 300 alone, so as not to have issues running programs.
Make regular Images of entire drive, in case it gets hosed.
Format and put on a clean image.
