I've got a machine in that is giving me a disk read error message right after the Gateway splash screen. I have been through the BIOS, ribbon cables, jumpers and attempted repair via recovery console which has helped in the past but not this time. Windows XP, 2 HDD's, primary drive is a Maxtor. I was getting a POST code of 302d which I am unable to locate. (Intel BIOS) All data appears to be intact, drives are just not bootable. (both contain an OS) Any ideas?

Alright, seeing as how there was not a single response for quite awhile it appeared as though I had asked some sort of taboo question. Paranoid? Hmmmm? Maybe. Just stuck a HDD with Ubuntu on the machine and it booted right up!

It appears as though it's just time for a new drive and reinstall

You could use UBCD to check out the hard drive and see if it reports any errors under the Maxtor utility. It might even be able to recover bad sectors enough so that you could get it booted and get the info off of it.

Drives have been tested with DOS based diagnostic software, all tests passed. Accessing the data is no problem, removed drives and used a "USB to IDE or SATA Adapter" in this case IDE. There's no need to boot off the drive to retrieve the data

It's just time for a new drive!! I'm happy for the customer that all data was intact.
