Strange title but broadband isn't available everywhere here yet.

A client asked me to check out his PC as DUN had stopped working.
When I tried to establish a connection, I get the following message:

Error 633: The modem or other connecting device is already in use of not configured properly.

I suspect that this could be a registry problem, as the machine is running slowly and even installing a known working modem makes no difference.

I can find no definitive answer to this problem.

Any thoughts?

I JUST had this problem yesterday. What it turned out to be was the actual modem itself. I hooked up an external USB modem and it worked flawlessly.

I Disabled all processes not needed by the system, made a new profile, made sure all configurations were correct, ensured there were no COM port conflictions...But it all boiled down to the actual hardware.

I was reading that that error almost ALWAYS leads to hardware.

It's getting weird

Tried a working modem, same result. Modem worked fine in another PC.

Tried to use the (faulty) modem through Hyperterminal, worked just fine. Out of frustration, installed AOL8 to see if that would give me any additional error messages, it didn't, because it worked just fine as well.

So I now know that the hardware and the drivers are fine, but IE and Outlook express do not work with the modem.

Any more thoughts?

I would try calling the ISP tech support.

Have you tried "rarepair" I recently came across the same problem and found rarepair which solved the problem, I had a hard time finding it but it works like a charm. (google "rarepair.exe")
