Hi

This one has be beaten. I have a HP Desktop from 2009 on the bench.

Last year the problems started and thought it was down to low ram and a failing hard drive it was very slow so upped the ram to 4GB and fitted an SSD. Speeded the system up a lot. But the customer came back a month ago to say it was still rebooting and had done daily since getting it back.

It takes around 12+ hours to make the problem happen

So I have ran a full memtest for 24 hours no issues.
Checked the SSD
Replaced the SATA cables x 2
Replaced the CMOS Battery
Replaced the PSU
Reinstalled Windows

There is nothing in Event Viewer. No Blue screen on reboot

It's running Windows 7.

When it reboot the error message is "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Devices or Inset the Boot Media in selected Boot Devices and press a key"

If I do Ctrl Alt Del and select a boot device it only picks up the DVD drive no hard drive. If I hold the power button in and start it up again it detects the drive again.

There is no BIOS update available.
There is no blown caps.

I'm at the point of where I think it's a replacement computer

Sounds like a fun one! Gut feeling is the mobo but since it seems to always detect the DVD drive every time have you tried:
1. Swapping the SATA ports over, does the issue then follow the port or the hard drive?
2. Remove the DVD drive from the equation, just in case something is interfering there (long shot but I always strip it down the basics). Hell, unplug everything else on the mobo as well if you haven't already.

Sounds like something on the Mobo. Chipset or SATA controller maybe? Have you run any diagnostics on the system? We use Quicktech from Ultra-x.

I have not run any tools like this. I have never really needed them until this job.

Tried all these optiions it was just too early when I did the first post to remember all the steps.
and you had that exact reboot issue before you switched to an SSD?

Yes. So seems to be the mobo...

I agree sounds like something with the motherboard.

Thats my thoughts now

I spoke to the client a few hours ago and we have ordered a new system and are going to movethe SSD into the new system since they have bought it.

That was going to be my suggestion anyway as soon as I saw "2009 desktop" - for stuff that old I'll tell customers "I can probably fix it, but it's probably not worth you paying for my time to do so - I recommend replacing the system and we can migrate your data." Quite frankly software is more expensive than the new system in some cases, though the really expensive stuff (e.g. Dragon Medical at $1800) you can deactivate and reactivate on a new system.
