I am looking for a Desktop Instant Messaging Application. Our people are spending a great deal of time walking from office to office to find lost files, etc.

We need to be able to do the following.

1. Run in house on our network.
2. Create Groups that people belong to.
3. Only show people who are logged into the app/network.
4. Have admin control to add delete people.
5. Be able to send messages to all uses at once.
6. Be able to have notification display until the user clicks it.

Anyone know of anything or done this in the past any info would greatly be appreciated.

Hmm, only ones I know of that come close are internal network messengers.
I have only played with 2 in our office...
Lan Messenger and BeeBeep.

I prefer the BeeBeep, has most of what you mentioned as well. Been playing with it lately.

These are free programs, so not sure about how secure they may be.

For internal messaging we use an old version of Ejabberd server with equally old Exodus clients. People here hate change.

But it works well, is free, and I think does everything you've listed. Except perhaps #3. It indicates online users, but I don't recall if there's actually an option to hide offline users.

We run Ejabberd on an old desktop and just install the client on whoever needs it. The setup is all local to our network, no access to outside chats.

The industry standard these days is Slack.

Powerful, easy to use, and best of all free.

You can pay for extra features, but unless you're a very large organization it's not necessary.

Its great for separating into groups by tasks or projects, it's become increasingly popular.

Since we're Microsoft partners, we have Office 365.
With Office 365, you get Skype for Business (formerly known as Lync). Default use is for internal, all users in your business with an account.
Can also do it externally if you enable that feature.
Works great, ties in with Outlook...so you can always track history of conversations, or missed chats will e-mail themselves to ya.
Has good apps for phones/tablets.
Can do desktop presentations, video conferencing, etc.
Office people can chat with people on the road, and visa versa. I'm 10 miles away from my office right now, yet I can chat with anyone at the office, or anyone else on the road somewhere else.

And you get to learn it, so you can show it to clients another perk of Office 365.

"Practice what you preach!"
