Dell Inspiron N5110 Laptop came in today :

Laptop powers on but the screen stays black
The CPU fan stops completely after about 5 seconds of powering on
The only LED's that illuminate are the power and the wifi (no HD activity)
As soon as you press the power button the laptop turns off immediately.

Any ideas folks?

I'm guessing you haven't done any troubleshooting.....

Start with the memory. Pull out 1 stick and try again. If that fails too, try the other. Then the other socket.

Sorry forgot to mention..

Tried alternative memory in both slots, tested that.
Reseated the processor and re-applied thermal paste in the process
Tried an external display.
Tried booting to BIOS without HD Installed.

I'm quite sure it's board related but wouldn't want to jump to conclusions.

The customer said he was doing a dell update - keyboard and monitor froze - held the power button but wouldn't go off so he removed the battery. Since then it has been in the state it's in now..

I initially thought HD or overheating issue.

I'm sure if it was that you'd 9/10 get a message to tell you. Seems that way with other brands anyway.

Probably a BIOS update that didn't complete and the system was shut down after the old BIOS was cleared but before the new one was written to the chip.
