That applies to chromium, not chrome. Chromium is not Chrome. Google Chrome is available for Linux but most Linux distros do not include it as it is partly closed source. If you download the full real Chrome from Google it will sync just fine. Google was sloppy and some of their APIs have been placed into Chromium builds and are being pulled. So if you have Chromium sync may stop working.

Repeat as often and loudly as necessary. Just like there is no such thing as "stock Android" on any device in the market, including the Pixel phones.

The base code that is the Chromium browser and Android is customized to a lesser or greater extent in every product in which it gets used.

The Google Chrome browser is based on Chromium but is also "tarted up" quite a bit.
