I was transferring some data off of a USB drive and onto a computer using the command prompt xcopy command. It got about half way done then I got this "Insufficient memory" error. Is that referring to RAM memory or hard drive buffer???

The XP computer has 6 GB of RAM memory.

Hi Reg, I would say this is a hard drive buffer error.

Was there any particular reason why you chose xcopy, rather than fabs, or datagrab?

I like the command prompt because it is uneffected by Windows permissions, file in use errors and all of the other usual error crap.
I also don't want to miss anything of importance that software like Fabs might miss.
I usually selectively copy the entire users (or XP documents & settings folder) and additionally look for folders that the customer may have left just inside the C drive. I may also back up the programs folder as there's a few obscure programs that save data or settings in there.

Ahh ok. Sorry, I was just being nosey.

I used to use a program called backrex, then found fabs, and have never looked back. Like you, I always check what programs are installed, any 'funny ones', and then I check where they save the files, and back those up separately.

Had one earlier last week, some video editing prog, saved everything within prog files. Wondered why progfiles was over 140Gb in size!

If this XP computer has 6 gigs of RAM...is it 64 bit? Or....was it 32 bit but someone did some of those fake hacks to get it to use more RAM...which usually just end up with really weird time wasting quirks such as you're experiencing.

Are you attempting to rebuild the existing machine or is this an upgrade?

I rebuilt a machine and then migrated the data from one of my in-shop drives to the customer's computer and again to their brand new USB drive. I encountered the same problem on each. Previously I had never had this problem. My drive is an older drive -- a Maxtor 3200 - might only have an 8 MB buffer, 7200 RPM.
