Credit Cards

Okay, wasn't meaning to jump down anyones throat just thought some people may see it as a little unprofessional. I want to look as professional as I can when dealing with clients. I also would like to know how I would be able to give someone a receipt for it?

Square is very professional. In fact many customer comment on how cool it is taking credit with a cell phone. Before square i used pay-pal and had to use the customers computer to make a transaction, half the time the card would get denied of the site would not work properly. That was un professional.

Why would it look any less professional than someone whipping out one of the old carbon copy swipers from their briefcase? I think it'd be a lot more suave than one of those, and right on par with a current single-purpose swipe device.

What's a carbon copy?

Looks like this: Credit Card Charge Slips

I also use a credit card imprinter with these charge slips. I imprint the card, fill out the form and have the customer sign the slip.

Doing this proves that the card was present during the transaction and not a phone/mail order. This is very handy if the customer disputes the transaction as it proves both the card and customer's signature.

BTW, I process my charges through Heartland Payment Systems - $45/month + 1.64% for Debit, 1.80% for Credit and 1.95% for Rewards cards. Average of 12 transactions per month.

JustMe: Don’t you think that this process is more time-consuming?

Not really. It does take about 2 minutes for this payment process, but it is only about minute longer than waiting for my customer to write a check and me writing "Paid in Full", the date and check number on my invoice.

I've been doing it this way for years and have never had problems (knock on wood). :D

What services do you use to accept credit cards?

You may not need ANY credit card setup at first. When I first started I was really concerned that I wouldn't look professional if I didn't accept credit cards but I've come to find out that almost all my customers like to pay with a check. The one scenario where I could see a need to accept credit cards right from the start is for remote support. I also think people have different expectations for on-site service vs. retail service. If I had a store front I'd probably be more concerned about accepting credit cards.
