Hi I posted a while ago about rescuing some data from a formatted hard drive. I have managed to do so using r-studio but there are some critical jpeg files that seem to be corrupted/damaged. When opened in Infranviewer they are reported as having corrupted headers!!?? Is there anything I can do to rescue these photos? The data seems to be there but nothing is able to read the files.

Contrary to what CSI would have us believe, data recovery is not so easy. If part of the data has been over-written, the chances of recovery are slim to none. You may still be able to recover some of this, however, you're probably looking at a forensic level analysis. Basic recovery tools are not capable of reconstructing pieces of data.

There are several Windows programs that claim to be able to repair JPEG headers (assuming all the actual image data is present). Just google "jpeg repair". None are free, and I have no experience with any of them.

If you still have the hard drive image you took during data recovery, you might try using PhotoRec to re-recover the images.

Hi,

I tried the renaming trick first out, but no luck:( I've also run Photorec but can't seem to get this to recognize the image created with R-Studio. Any ideas? I could always run it on the original hard drive, which I still have, but will it find photos/jpegs if a drive has been reformatted?

I've also trawled Google and found the various Jpeg recovery applications. I tried a couple of the trial versions on my recovered broken photos, but none worked so far!

I wish I had one of those CSI machines! or the massive computer in Hawaii five O that scans broken kit and media by them placing it on the glass...(wouldn't relish changing the glass on that sucker) :D
